Confirmation gifts???

Not sure if this is the right forum but thought I'd try. I am going to my dh's cousin's confirmation party and need a gift. This kid has everything so it seems silly to give money. I was thinking a contribution in his name to a catholic charity would be appropriate. Not being catholic, I don't know much about this stuff and am wondering if these would be OK. Please give me honest advice or ideas of what else if a contribution is not appropriate.

That sounds like a nice idea.

Of the few gifts I got when I was confirmed - I was older, 21 - the two I found the most meaningful were the Family Bible my grandmother gave me, and a second-hand prayer book a friend gave me. I also got a crucifix necklace, but that might not be that appropriate for a boy!

Actually, the money to charity isn't the best idea. It's traditional to give some sort of a religous-related item for confirmation. A Bible, a prayer book, a nice rosary, that sort of thing.

You might find a Catholic bookstore near you and look through the books. I'm told there are some good books out on the faith for teenagers - I assume your DH's cousin is in either middle school/early high school?

I have the benedictine starter kit. I had just ordered the benedict medal and book, but the system overcharged me on shipping, so MonkRock sent me the whole kit :-D

P&L - there you go with the MonkRock again! That does look really cool though - and a shirt a boy might wear

A religious gift is traditional. A "man's" rosary (black, wood, etc), a holy spirit crucifix, a four way medal, etc. If finances are an issue, finding a "cool" rosary like this would probably be the most appropriate way to go.

I <3 MonkRock. It's a family-run company/apostolate, so I try to help them as much as I can

the MonkRock site is very cool. They even make the Chapel Veil look hip and appealing!! My first thought was that it reminded me of Death to the World . is there anything like that for Catholics? Some sort of very cool but very solid magazine subscription?

I think Faith and Family is pretty cool, as well as This Rock, but I don't think there is anything like "Death to the World" out there.

Now, if we are talking Catholic Metal, that's a different story...

the things about Death to the World is that it looks hard core and feels hard core but it is really just a low budget magazine (run off on a balck and white copier, literally with pictures and text cut and pasted) written/ edited by monks and is reprints of stories of saints, sermons from the church fathers and and some quotes. if it were glossy it would be seriously uncool but my kids and I just love it.

But seriously uncool is what makes cool, well.... Cool!
But then again, I think nuns and monks (especially the habited ones) are the coolest people EVER.
EVER!!!

Orthodox monastics (both male and female) ALWAYS wear their habits, except maybe when doing some heavy work that the habit might get in the way of, but they need their abbot/abbess' blessing (permission) to do so. The "habit reform" (which was post-Vatican II in the Catholic Church) has not happened among the Orthodox.

I hope you know I was only kidding. Your post reminded me I needed to go there and spend way too much money.

I have a cousin being confirmed in a couple weeks as well. I think I'm going to get her a rosary, holy spirit hoodie, and story of a soul.

The habit reform, while a topic for another thread, was such a horrible loss to the Church:

I know. I was just tellin everyone else about their apostolate, so they could go to the site, too.

I LOVE Story of a Soul. I have the one put out by TAN. There is a newer edition that includes letters from Therese to her sister. I haven't read that edition, so I cannot comment.
What rosary are you looking to get her? I have this one for use at home, and this one that stays in my purse.

Definitely another thread. But one thing to keep in mind is that not all orders are habited, others stopped wearing the habit. There is a difference.

Check out what just happened at my Church...
