Foraging Mamas!

Are there any other wild food mamas here? My goal this summer is to create at least 3 meals per week using wild foods from Memorial day to Columbus Day.

So far this week we have had dandelion greens and fiddleheads Tomorrow I am going out to find nettles (for steaming and lasagna) and dandelions to make dendelion honey spread! Maybe some knotweed.

What are you mamas finding in your areas?

I put this here instead of food and nutrition as I thought it could work into frugality, but Mods feel free to move

Awesome!! I envy you your ability to do that and your commitment. At our elevation we are severely limited- we do mushrooms (mostly oyster, not my fav) and asparagus, some berries.... are you veg?

I'm so interested in this but have no idea how to start. My parents live on 17 natural (unfarmed, unchemicaled, etc) acres and I'm sure I could find lots of very useful stuff if I knew what I was looking for!

Your goals sound awesome! Do you have a blog where you talk about foraging or have pictures of what you find?

So far I have had lots of dandelion greens. Nothing much else is growing yet. here in Maine we're behind everyone else by a few weeks or more. This weekend or the next I'll start looking for some fiddle heads and ramps.

I hadn't really set a goal for myself but I'd like to eat something wild/foraged at least once a day. I got myself a field guide this winter and I really need to look through it. Most of our property is unmanaged so I am sure we've got more stuff out there.

We just moved and it looks like I'll be able to do this in my own yard some.

We have 2 cherry trees, and apple tree, 2 hazelnut trees, various herbs, some "weeds" which are edible. Some things I'm not sure if I want to eat though as I don't know what the lawn has been treated with so I need to do a bit more research before I start eating our dandelions

You might very well be surprised. Most greens grow in some capacity everywhere! (lambsquarters, cleavers, sorrel, etc) I just moved from 4000 feet elevation in the AZ desert to the NE and there were TONS of things that were edible there!

yes I am veg. If I wasn't though I have often thought about geese hunting!

My kids are learning how to fish this weekend!

I have an herb blog here and occasionally talk about some wild edible things there www.redclovermama.blogspot.com probably more in coming weeks!

There are some other good blogs out there too. I will post some links later!

I highly recommend the Forage Ahead group on yahoogroups. The dude who runs it is VERY knowledgable and has written lots of books and teaches foraging even in NYC (central park-Steve Brill) check out his site at www.wildmanstevebrill.com !

We are big into foraging around here! This year we have enjoyed lots of nettles, dandilion greens and flowers, tons of violets and greens, burdock root, chickweed, cattail shoots, salmonberry flowers and wild mint ( which is awful around here for some reason!). We have forest and orchard right in our backyard... very frugal an a big part of our lives!
Nice blog Rainbowmoon! It seems like you and I make parallel recipes!lol I enjoyed your links!
