I'd call and double check, but yeah, I am pretty darn sure many of them will accomodate this.

You can also ship a pallet of stuff with the USPS. Make sure to go to a big one though as they have to have fork life facilities. They put all your boxes on a pallet, wrap it in plastic and mail it that way. Cheaper if you are sending a lot.

That's a fabulous idea, but all our mail here has to get in/out via seaplane, and they couldn't forklift onto the plane...so I'd have to haul everything to Juneau and mail from there...and frankly. I'm willing to just mail. There's not really that much, and it's 2/3 clothing/linens, so it's not that heavy.

ok, another baby shower question!

I have a coworker having her first baby. She is not very mainstream in most of her ideals, so I am assuming she will be the same way with her baby. I KNOW she is seeing a midwife and doing a homebirth, coworkers have said she is planning on bfing, I do not know about cd..

But I figure, if she is alternative with most things, cds aren't too scary a topic to broach, right? The shower is a surprise or I'd ask her.

I went shopping today with dp, he set me a budget of $50 tops for gifts (he babies, can you tell?) I was thinking more the $35 range since I don't know her well..

Anyway, I stopped by Sugar and Spice and picked up (all new- they ARE gifts)

one size fuzzibunz with insert in yellow (closest gender neutral I could find)
one tin of non-petroleum Baby Bottom Better (which we LOVED and I used to order from Canada for)
a set of cute bamboo baby eating utensils age 6months+ (a spoon and fork that look like wood! So cute!)

What do you think? Too non-mainstream for a mama that may or may not cd? I went for the "onesize" because I figured, even if she doesn't want to cd at all, it doesn't hurt to have an emergency diaper in the bag, right?

I know for the budget amount I could have gotten a lot more "items" at target, or tru, and that was my main issue, really..

I mean, I could have gotten a gender neutral outfit and breastmilk bags or something? Should I have gone a different route? I checked those store's websites, though and she hadn't registered there, so I assumed she would rather not?

UPDATE: Found out she WILL be cloth diapering ! Woot!

I think its a good idea.
Another idea is to get her a sling. PM me about that idea, because I can't discuss it here........
I have started giving them to everyone who is having a baby

I looked at slings, but the ones that need a certain "size" make me kind of freeze up.. I wouldn't mind getting sized for "me" but I am not so comfortable judging someone else's fit for one like that..

Some of the slings were past my budgeted price range, also.

I think she may have been suggesting a, um, non-store option for acquiring said sling They are not hard to make......

I think there are probably more people willing to give babywearing a go than cd...on the other hand, if she wants to cd then that's a valuable gift because diapers are expensive! Can you say something discreetly at work...just along the lines of "I heard you were planning a homebirth...are you interested in things like ____ and cd too?" Then you'd know and the secret would still be safe. She might guess that you are planning to get her something, but that doesn't ruin the secret of the shower. If you've homebirthed/done CD you could even come at it from that angle, you know? Just a hey, coming to say hi as one crunchy mommy to another kind of thing...

BTW, if you do pursue the sling thing (or even if you don't) I highly recommend telling her about the instructional videos at mayawrap.com . I had tried slings several times and never liked them at ALL until I watched those videos and finally learned how to wear the thing properly. I was actually pretty close, but just needed some pointers on technique. Several tiems though I have seen people wearing slings who clearly didn't know how to wear them correctly, and it worries me both for the safety of the baby and also because I betcha the mom isn't going to keep babywearing very long cuz it's not going to be easy or convenient.

Hey, I'm 12 Weeks 5 days!!! I a so ready to get my energy back. And to get past the urge to puke multiple times a day.

At least my co-workers have been sympathetic (and it is 4 guys and 1 woman). Of they guys, only one has kids (and they are older than me) - so the other guys are just freaked out a bit by everything preggo. We had an 8 hour training last Monday, and the 2 younger ones asked if it was okay if they drank coffee during it. Apparently I looked pretty green. What is also some very lucky timing, one coworker who was a 2 pack a day smoker just quit. I used to get sick just being near him - he doesn't stick anymore, yeah. (Pretty awesome for him too).

During my last trip in Anchorage I was finally able to stop at Sugar and Spice. I was very happy and surprised to see that Dawn (ketchikan local) was selling her beautiful silk slings there! I have one and used it with my little one until recently. I could still use it but it takes a toll on my hips (I am 30 weeks pg). Anyways, I could rave about her slings forever! They are ring slings so it should fit just about anyone. I second mayawrap.com...great videos!
How does one get started with CD? There are so many choices and system. How do you know which is best? I am very interested! What about the bummis starter kit?

I didn't realize that Sugar and Spice had used CDs! I might have to pop in and check those out

I have quite an extensive cd collection.

Well, in my defense, there was a point when I had three in cds at the same time, in different sizes, so..

Anyway, Dp likes Fuzzibunz best. If I give him too many options he ends up making a mistake like putting a doubler in a wool wrap or something.. So I would stick with the same TYPE of cd, but you can mix and match brands.. like I am going to do all pocket diapers with the next baby. The may not all be fuzzibunz, but if dp knows they all should have an insert, then that's what they all end up with, but too many options just confuses him..

I love the look of fitteds and their absorbancy, but then you need to add a cover and that is too many steps for dp.. I tried prefolds for a while when I was sahm, I never did get really good with that little y shaped gadget..

You can read lots of reviews online, though.. there is a diapering forum here on mdc..

I have lots of nanipoos fitteds which I love for the newborn stage, then we are starting small fuzzibunz from there..

(ha, and I am not even pregnant yet!)

We mainly use fitteds. As for a cover, around the house we usually went without a cover. Or she would wear wool over top. Wool is awesome because it is a cover and pants all in one. You have to relanolize them every so often, but that's really easy. We have a few all-in-one's for when we either have a babysitter or when she's in the church nursery. It is usually cheaper to do fitteds with either wool or no cover. And actually, fleece pants that are 100% polyester would work as a cover/pants as well. They don't work as well as wool, but they work.

I would see about getting some used diapers for stash building. You can get good ones here in the trading post and on diaperswappers.com. Sometimes you can find some on Craigslist, but not real often.

i bought a bunch of nice wool covers from the trading post here. i decided to use prefolds because they seemed like the least expensive option! someone gave me a bunch of lame gerber prefolds that are useless. i think they sell them just to put people off of cd. they are so worthless. anyway, those are rags now (and they are not even very good for that. they are more like cheesecloth) and i bought some nice indian prefolds, which are great. they are easy enough. i also bought a couple of nice hemp fitted diapers from little beetle, but they are more expensive...and we started ec pretty early, and don't really use diapers anymore. had i realized that i would only need to own a few diapers (as opposed to like 12-20) i would have just bought 6 fitted little beetle diapers and 2 or 3 covers.

as it is, we have an incredible excess of diapers and covers. dd has never worn most of them.
