Public assistance mamas time for a new thread? *support only please*

I hadn't seen the old thread in quite a while so I thought I would start a new one.

Things are going pretty well here, my foodstamp allowance has been cut back to $260 per month, but with my summer CSA about to start in a month or so, we will be just fine for food. I feel like I am living in the lap of luxury in regards to food when I get to go down and pick up my share of organic veggies every week all summer long. : They allow low income families to pay half of the normal fee and they also accept food stamps, so it works out perfectly for us!

I have a question about Section 8 housing if anyone out there knows the answer. My income changes pretty much weekly. I try to keep everyone who needs to know up to date, but my housing has been hard. I live in an apartment complex that is mostly HUD housing, so I have to do "update" forms when my income changes by more than $200 per month. I end up doing one every couple of months, and lately, it has been every month. I know it makes a ton of paperwork for the woman at the office who does it, but today I mentioned that the new paperwork that she just gave me is really only going to be effective for one month, as I have a new schedule again, and she said she is going to apply to HUD to not have to change my rent amount if it is for less than 4 weeks of pay. In other words, if my income goes down to zero for 3 weeks, and I know about it before hand, she will have the right to not adjust my rent amount. This just doesn't sound legal. Anyone know how it works with HUD???

For the record, the last income statement I turned in to them was supposed to be effective for 6-8 weeks, and it ended up changing after only 2 weeks, so frustrating, but not anyone's fault.

I so hate, hate, hate living in subsidized housing. Granted, the extremely low rent is pretty great, but having to deal with people who look down on me and my family and who never let me forget that they are somehow better than I am because they hold my housing future in their hands just stinks.

Anyone else out there?

I've been wondering where the thread has been.

I am getting ready to close on a house. My mortgage (plus insurance and taxes) is going to be about 1/2 of what I was going to pay in rent. I don't get the fancy tax credit (because I have a cosigner who already owns a home), but I did qualify for FHA, and got a really good interest rate because I have good credit, and the cosigner makes decent money, and my mortgage broker about did 42 backflips to make it happen. (And yes, I was doing the cash in an envelope thing to be able to cover the down payment.)

I've been working 40 hours a week for the census, which is nice work (I drive around and verify addresses), but it's temp work until June, and the cost of daycare for 2 kids is about 1/2 of what I'm making, and between that job and cleaning houses and sewing and painting shirts (gee, I only have 465 jobs, right? How come I never have any money?!) I feel like I never see them anymore.

We have our first appointment with the real (not intake) welfare/food stamps counselor next month. I'm hoping that since there has been an influx of money from the stimulus business that there is childcare subsidy money now. (My state has had a long wait list for the childcare subsidy, and I haven't been able to get any.) It's really depressing to work my tail off and then watch half of my pay go to childcare.

I was thinking of starting another of these threads myself.

Well, here we are a month from school loans and broke again. But there are bright spots in life. It's not assistance for us, but it is assistance, so I'll add it here. We were finally approved to watch my nieces and nephews for the state. We also have one more child lined up, and if we can find one more we'll have our full allotment without doing more paperwork. It doesn't pay all the bills by a long shot but it helps greatly.

I've been working hard to green up my groceries on our meager income. I don't have an csas nearby nor do I know of any farmer's markets that accept food stamps at this time. However, I went on a bit of a search this month and was able to get lots of yummy things from local natural food stores and from schnuck's, a grocery store in our area that is big on organic produce. I really want to check up whole foods but it's a bit of out my way and I'm trying to conserve gas. It's good to know just how good you can do on food stamps however. I also buy most of my cleaning supplies on food stamps since I use things like vinegar and baking soda, and I'm going to buy some koolaid but not to drink...to dye some nylon covers with!

*bump*

Anyone still out there? I lost my job a week and a half ago now, and just had my appointment today to figure out my cash assistance benefit while I am searching for a new job. I am going back to school in the fall half time, so am only looking for a 15-20 hour a week position right now. Honestly, I think I may drag my feet a teeny bit on finding a job and enjoy a bit of the summer for right now.

The way it works in my state, I had to go in for an appointment with the person who does the money end of things, so she figured out how much I would receive in benefits, then I go in two or three weeks to talk with the person who is in charge of figuring out what my "family plan" will be. My plan is to go to school and return to work half time, but have my son in daycare full time in order to work on homework. I know that I will need to work at least 20 hours a week in order to qualify for cash assistance, but they won't *make* me work until after I meet with the person who does the family plan.

I feel a little guilty about waiting to look for a job until then, but I would love to get my house cleaned, find a good daycare for DS, get my resume cleaned up, and actually have some time to check out the help wanted ads before I go applying for really crappy jobs.

Tell me there are still some public assistance MDC mamas around!

Anne, I so hear you. I hate, hate, hate having to use it, but am thankful that it is there to get us through. I am hoping to finish up school with a bachelor's in Psychology and an RN so I can get a job that will allow us to never use assistance again. It is so hard when the workers make you feel that you are beneath them because you are asking for help, and when people treat you differently when they know you are on assistance. It stinks. Hope that things look up for you soon.

I'm still around, life is kinda sucking right now. The lack of money really sucks The bank took away my car because after 4 years of struggling I just couldn't go it anymore. My parents stepped in and bought a used car from a neighbor over the weekend that was supposed to be in great shape. Umm yeah. Every day we find something new, yesterday I got stranded in 108F temps 45 miles from home. It appears the car decided to leak all the water and radiator fluid out while I was getting my bone scan. I was to pick up my special needs kiddo an hour later, if she'd been in the car with me when it over heated it could have been deadly for her I got the car to a friends house but it was over an hour before we could open up caps to see what was going on. An hour in that heat would have been bad bad news for us. Today I am going to try putting my foot down and begging my parents to tell the guy to take the car back. I need something reliable. We go to the hospital for 3 days at the end of the month and taking that car 600+ miles round trip scares the crap outta me.

I'm praying I can go to school in the fall. I got my classes but this transportation thing is an issue. My parents are paying for half the gas to help out (its going to cost at least $15 day in gas and thats if prices stay under $3 gal its $2.87 right now). I might be able to take the bus to school, need to try moving the lab portion to a different day/time but its only $6 to take the bus round trip and it goes straight to the college

Anyway, over all, life is sucking, mainly because of lack of money and I'm tired of it Praying dd gets approved for SSI, we have our appt Monday and I got her psych records and man I am pissed, they have her down as severe and disabled. They put that down 2 friggin YEARS AGO and have put it down on every visit since. She would have qualified 2 years ago! If they had told me that I would still have my car: I wouldn't have to rob Peter to pay Paul every month with bills. I found out the amounts she will get and dam, its more then we get in cash aid every month so I would still qualify for aid for 1 child and I plus dd's SSI. I feel like we would be rich, we wouldn't but my god, even having an extra $20 a month right now would be amazing for me I can't imagine an extra $600+.

Anyway, I need to hit the shower and get the kids up, we have a counciling appt with dd today (yes, on a Saturday) and need to leave in 45 minutes... yeah, cutting it close

Can you take online classes instead?

ETA: nevermind I just saw that you have lab. My school has free bus passes for students. Does yours do that?

I'm still around.

I took over a second business when I moved (SEEMED like a good idea....things did not go as planned), and at the same time, my grandmother got sick and that translated into me having no help with the move. (No, my grandmother wasn't going to be helping me move. ) So I think it's been about a month (I have no concept of time anymore!), and I'd say we're about 90% unpacked/moved in. Even with all of the issues with the businesses during the move (I couldn't find ANYTHING, the transition of ownership did NOT go as planned, no internet, yada yada yada), I managed to make enough money to cover my mortgage payment, and that's all that really mattered to me.

I had to pull my kids from Parents Day Out (twice a week, five hours a day) because I couldn't afford it anymore. My 4 year old was heartbroken, but I just couldn't swing it anymore. Last night, the director offered me a part-time job there, and if I'm working there, my kids can go for free. Woohoo!

I need to re-apply for cash assistance, once I can get all of my financials for the past two months straightened out. (LOL, see "can't find anything due to the move" above.) The way they figure around self-employment, well, I'm not sure that they even know how it's figured, to be honest. I'm really not looking forward to another four hours in their waiting room again.

Satori, I am so sorry things are so hard right now. The car sounds like a really frightening thing to have to deal with, especially with the long hospital trips and a SN daughter. I can't even imagine. Have you talked to the neighbor who sold you the car yet? What about lemon laws? Are there any where you live?

When do you find out if your DD gets approved for SSI? That sounds like it could really turn things around for you. Crossing my fingers over here.

Moving is always so insanely hard, I can't imagine taking over a business while in the middle of a move. You are one amazing mama for just staying sane through that.

That is awesome that you were offered a job at the Parent's Day Out with free tuition for your DD! I was working at my son's preschool where he was receiving half price tuition, and the state was paying the rest, so it was free for me. It was an incredible experience for him. He was absolutely thriving there, and I loved the occasional day I was able to take off with him there. I was fired for unsubstantiated claims though, so I had to pull him. It was ugly, and I am still in shock and hurt by it. Now more for my son's loss than my own. I hope your job works out and it is so exciting that your daughter can still go see her friends!!

So glad a few of us are still around! Not a tribe that anyone ever plans to be in, but it is so great that we can support each other.

Do any of you have a "spend down" on Medicaid?

Since my husbands been on disability, we've had our family on medicaid. We've made our third move in the past few years and when we moved last year, we were told we'd need to spend $400 per month before our insurance kicked in. We simply had NO wiggle room in our budget to do that, but the case worker did tell my husband that we could admit him to the hospital, submit the bill that we had no means of paying, then he could get his insurance to cover his meds that he needed every single month. Love the way we could trash our credit and mis-use hospital services we never had the means to pay, just to get the medication he needs to KEEP him out of the hospital in the first place...

Anyway, she did something and the spend down was eliminated. she told us not to worry about what she did, and we were too thankful at the time to question it.

Now we've moved to another state again and we're told we'll likely have a spend down because my husband makes so much (we're living on $1500/month for a family of 6. is that really "so much?"). We're still in the same situation where we can't afford a spend down like we had previously... We're making a big effort to follow dave ramsey and get ourselves out of the debt we're already in and really don't want to incure additional debt we know we wont be able to pay off if he has to have a hospital visit each month just to show a bill so he can get his medication. his medication out of pocket costs $1500+ once a month and it's totally necessary to keep him out of hospitals.

Any idea what our previous case worker had done? WHen she originally told us we had a spend down, we told her we'd never had one previously. She thought we were lying to her but I swore up and down we never did, gave her the contact number to my previous case worker. It was after that she changed ours, however she did it, to no spend down. Our current case worker seems new and didn't seem to have a handle on things during our appointment - is it possible to ask someone else to look our case over, to see if there was a typo or something he may have missed, and see about getting the spend down reduced or eliminated?

Just don't know what to do. I'm waiting on our last case worker to send proof that our assistance has ended so we can officially open our case here.

I have never heard of a "spend down" at all. That just sounds insane. Any way you can get in touch with your old worker to figure out what she did?

I had never heard of it either until we moved from MI to OH. There they thought we were lying because we didn't have one in MI. Our income didn't change a bit - NOw we're moving from OH back to MI and the spend down thing is haunting us still. Our case can't be started here until I have the letter form OH stating our medical insurance is no longer active so I have to wait a good bit of time before we know for sure if we have one or not and the wait is making me very anxious. Our lives get turned upside down and inside out when my husband doesn't have his meds and I never, ever want to go through that again... yanno?

I am new here. My DP is a pizza delivery driver and when he went to deliver a couple pizzas he was held up at gunpoint, and had his wallet taken and our car was stolen. 12 hours later they found the car totalled in a park. Fortunately we had full coverage insurance and GAP coverage which is going to pay it off.

But now my DP is without a job, and has been looking for one and we need a new car, because we can only hold onto the rental for one month after we initially got it.

So today we went to Jobs and Family Services. We live in a big city and the building was huge, and it was packed. We had to have our diaper bag scanned at one of those machines like in airports, and they had a metal detector and three cops there full time.

We were there for 4 hours, but now we have Medic-Aid for DS and $370 a month in food stamps. Right now I'm the only one working so with this we should hopefully be able to cover all our bills until DP finds a new job. I hate having to use public assistance, but there's really no other option, and if it weren't for all this crap hitting us at once, we wouldn't be in this position, but this will allow us to get back on our feet and give us some breathing room with bills.

WTF?!! That's awful.. so sorry

He lost his job over it... because of the car, or why?

No he quit voluntarily because he didn't feel safe working there. The store was in a bad neighborhood, and they deliver to a lot of bad areas, and the store has been robbed multiple times. The Store Manger is also still sending delivery drivers to the apartment complex where DP was robbed.

We're unsure if he will qualify for unemployment or not, but we're going to call them and explain the situation and see what they say. He is hoping to transfer to a different store that is in our neighborhood which is much safer, and the store has never been robbed. But they're dragging their feet about the whole process, so if they take too much longer he'll have to find something else, because we can't afford to be stuck in limbo for too long.

my dh was working for an air pollution testing co. and quit because of unsafe work conditions- and he was able to get on unemployment because of it.

I'd love to join this group. We just got on assistance for the first time in the last few months, and it is such a help!
BORINGSCREENNAME- That is terrible what happened to your dh. And it is freaking me out a bit b/c I am a pizza delivery driver. My routes are pretty nice, though, and they block the worse areas off the map so we dont go there.
I'm thinking we are going to go to DSS and see if there is anything else that can help us as we just arent making it.. we payed off our lease until dec. but then Im so afraid we wont be able to pay our rent b/c dh hasnt found a job yet, so I'm going to look into low income housing and whatever else i can find. Dh will also be going to the local tech college this week to find out about financial aid, he's thinking about going to school b/c he just can't find a job.
I know things will get better eventually, but it suck to have to worry about stuff everyday... and not be able to get things I'd like to like I'd really like to get my son a new backpack for school, but even that seems like such a big purchase.

We are 90% sure we are moving to St Louis. How much of a nightmare is it to transfer WIC, SSI (which is being processed for DD1), Medicaid, Food Stamps, Short Term Disability (which is being process for DH) etc? These are questions I have before we make a decision as to what we will do. There isn't any reason to stay here in Lawrence except my husbands Mental Health Docs. Which we would need to find new Docs for him if we move back to STL.

My ILs are going to see about finding us a place to live like an apartment if we decide to do this. Sigh....I really don't want to go back there, but I think it would take some of the stress off my husband.
Hi mamas,

I reallly, really need your help. I am starting to feel the weight of my financial situation and it's really stressing me. I am going to try and be as clear as possible but the situation is pretty confusing. We are currently receiving medicaid and food stamps. I haven't applied for cash assistance but I really need to.

I am soon to be single mom(my stbx is joining the army), however, for financial reasons we have decided to stay married while he is in the service. So, he has agreed to pay child support and alimony plus we would get a stipend for housing. We would also receive medical benefits, etc.

I am trying to go back to school this august and I just found out I am going to receive less loans than I thought so I am trying to figure out if I can make this work. I am trying to get a nursing degree and unfortunately, I already have ba so I don't qualify for pell grants.

We should qualify for cash assistance...how long can you receive cash assistance and how much money does it normally give?

Will the stipend for housing be considered income because if so, than I will make too much money to qualify for food stamps?

I know that federal loans can disqualify you for receiving food stamps. If you use your loans for living expenses such as rent and transportation. What if you use it for childcare? Basically that is what I am going to be using the loans for.???

Does anyone know if they have childcare credit or something in florida? I could really use some help paying for childcare.
