I remember seeing this in the stores in Ameirca. Being in the fruit & veg section - I am assuming people eat it. How? What recipes call for cactus? What does it taste like?

My grandmother/aunt just cut off the spines, chop up and cook in a salad type deal. Like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nopal

It can be eaten raw it's kinda slimy that way but still good. I think it's got a distinct, mild taste to it. The "flower" (as my grandpa called it) can be eaten as well and is usually referred to as prickly pear and tastes sweet with the texture of a kiwi.

My grandma used to make Prickly Pear jelly. YUM! I miss it.

I've had it in fajitas before (in a restaurant in London).

I saw someone on Bobby Flays show make stuffed pablano peppers with cactus and mushrooms, it looked pretty good.

Dice it up and put it in a quiche with onions and pablano peppers.

Yeah, I knew these as nopalitos and thought of them as part of a Central/South American diet.
