Plase Help: amoxicillin and breastfeeding

I just had a tooth removed and now need to take 500mg amoxicillin. The dentist was unsure if continuing to BF would be ok. I tried to do a search and think that it's ok (it looks like it ranks as an L1 in Dr. Hale's book, but don't have the book to confirm).

If anyone knows I would appreciate it. Thanks!

It's an L1. Should be fine.

Amoxicillin is considered compatible with breastfeeding. But, as with all antibiotics, please consider adding probiotics to your diet (active live yeast cultures etc) so you don't end up with thrush. HTH

Can you tell me more about this?

Yes. Antibiotics are meant to kill off any bacteria. Unfortunately, it also kills off the friendly bacteria in your digestive track. In a healthy digestive track you have both friendly bacteria and yeast organisms. They keep each other in check. When you use antibiotics the friendly bacteria is destroyed. This allows the yeast to overgrow, resulting in thrush that can spread somewhere else in the body. That's why some HCPs will prescribe one Diflucan pill for women to take at the same time. By adding a source of friendly bacteria (acidophillus) you can help to do the same thing. Yogurt with active live cultures would do the trick, as does taking a probiotic capsule etc. I hope this answers your question. If not, let me know. I'll try my hand at it again.

Thanks so much for the help! I got some yogurt; any idea how much I should eat? I have to take the amoxicillin four times a day; should I have the yogurt every time or is nce a day enough?

Once or twice a day should be fine. Also, I kept typing digestive track, when I meant to say digestive tract. Man, my head just isn't in the game today

I hope whatever you needed the medication for is improving and you're feeling well soon.

Yogurt didn't do the trick for us when both of us ended up on the amoxicillin. I think we finally beat thrush, but I'm still boiling everything (including my nursing bras) to make sure. I went to Whole Foods and got a refrigerated powder baby probiotic to mix into his yogurt. And capsules for me to take. Of course, we just both landed right back on the amoxicillin, so I'm doubling up on the probiotics.
