I'm really appreciating this thread OP, and had similar thoughts as yours.

I agree %100 with the above by Yulia, yet feel like I need to be able to go inside my kids and SEE how good or not their immune system is. kwim? I've read the immunology 101, and more, we eat well, organic, not TF but I think we cover our bases. not vax'd, EBF to ages 3 or 4 for each. but still, I want an immune system check list, a way to evaluate us, how are we doing, are our methods to cope with illness (homeopathics, SA, rest, TLC) good enough, the right ones, are these kids o' mine as healthy as can be????

I don't want to sidetrack, but can someone point me to a thread (if it exists) on this? what does a healthy kid look like? I'm not trying to ask the stupid question. I thinm my kids are doing great, but put a kid with a harsh contagious disease next to them and i might flip out. kwim?

many thanks.

I don't think there is any 1 "right" way to support your child immune system. You need to find a regime that works for you and your family by trial and error. Sounds like you are doing great things and your children are very healthy. There is no way to know if your child was exposed to an infectous disaese if they would be sickened by it. All you can do is what you are already doing!

We decided to go ahead and give ds a prevnar vax when he was...9 mo? maybe? I don't know for sure without checking, but we were very delayed and selective. At that point we had decided to do hib and prevnar and were considering dtap. But only doing one at a time.

Well we did prevnar and within 6 hours my ds got a high fever, was miserable all night, and even more miserable the next day. We brought him back to the doctors because he was practically lathargic. He had come down with a massive double ear infection. NO signs of it the day before, when he got the vax...perfectly clear ears. Of course he "must have picked it up" after the vax or something...(we went straight home and never went anywhere else or did anything inbetween visits).

I *do* honestly believe he got the ear infection from the shot. He had also NEVER had an ear infection before and it was really painful for him.

I also know a couple of other IRL families whose children got more ear infections after the shot.

*oh and wanted to say we obviously stopped prevnar and did 2 doses of hib and 2 of dtap since then. We are considering finishing dtap and then being DONE with vaxing
My DD got her 3rd Hib shot and a week later was diagnosed with viral meningitis. It was the most terrifying experience of my life, waiting 48 hours for the spinal culture to come back. She has NEVER been sick before, not even a single ear infection, and while she was hospitalized, the doctor found an ear infection. Go figure.
