WooHoo! My mother's day gift to my mom is done! I'm so proud that I finished ahead of time. Granted it wasn't a very complicated project, but I've been known to wait to the very last minute to do these things.
You can see my attempts at photographing it here .

omg! It's lovely!

And thanks for the link to the prayer shawl ministry. I would love to make one. But I have one question because their was something I didn't quite grasp in the directions. What did they mean by this: "Cast on stitches in multiples of three - 54, 57, or 60. For example, if you use size 11 needles and cast on 54 stitches, 3 skeins of 'slightly bulky' yarn is enough."

Forgive me if this is a ridiculously obvious set of instructions that I am not getting; I am a novice knitter and have only completed a scarf so far .

You're very welcome! I think lot's of PSK use Homespun because of all the variety, it's weight knits up fast, it's machne washable so the receiver doesn't need to work about caring for a speciality fabric and it's relatively inexpensive. However you could use any bulky weight or even worsted. I think WW knitted on bigger needles would give you a lace like look and that could be very pretty.
Perhaps someone that's better than me at explaining patterns will chime in, but what I gathered is since the pattern is K3P3 it's multiples of 3. I decided to cast on 58 and slip the first stitch to give me a firm neat edge and didn't count that stitch in my pattern.

Very lovely! It looks cozy and warm, and good for you for getting it done early! Always nice when you can relax a little bit (and not sit up furiously knitting the night before! )

Thanks guys! I'm trying to make a point of doing mostly handmade gifts this year. I've got to start on my niece's quilt for her birthday in July just as soon as I finish the end of the year teacher gifts. I better get off the computer and get to work.

I've been doing this with family for years now. It does take some planning ahead, but it's worth it. It's also nice when family members appreciate our handiwork.

I've always done at least a few handmade gifts each year, but this year I'm trying to take it to the next level.
