Silly question?

Hello!

I plan on slinging my first (due in July) and an semi-odd thought occured to me.

Do you wear the baby to the potty? While you are ON the potty? If not, how do you put them down for a moment?

I can guess that maybe sling and baby are close and secure enough to the body that it isn't unlike going to the potty pregnant, and only a little akward... but if the sling is a little loose, isn't that tough?

Just thought I'd get an answer from the experianced.

Yep, definitely lots of potty-going while BWing, especially when out and about in public as there's no good place to put down a baby in a public bathroom. Although I eventually caved and got a bouncy seat specifically for the bathroom for those times, esp. post-partum, when I just needed to attend to certain personal care issues without a baby on me.

The biggest thing is to make sure you don't have any dangling bits of the carrier left hanging loose that could fall into the potty (mei tai straps, ring sling tail, wrap ends, hood straps on a soft structured carrier). Also, to make sure, esp. out and about in public, that all the clothing parts are adequately restored to order to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions.

I often went to the bathroom with my baby on - either in a pouch or in a Moby Wrap. I can be awkward - mainly just buttoning up jeans or fiddling with a belt, but otherwise I didn't have any problems.

...and to clarify...your sling should NOT be loose - if it is than it's too big and won't be comfortable for very long.

Ooh, thank you! I tried a sling on at a baby store and I had a hard time imagining fitting a baby in it- but I'd grabbed the one that should have fit MY body.

Maybe it actually DID fit.

Quirky - I think the bouncey seat is likely a good idea. At least for those more involved potty breaks.

I have definitely peed on the potty with baby on my back, or in a sling on the front!

All the time! DH also wore the sling to the potty, and got some odd looks in public places

Yup -

All of my LOs have accompanied me to the potty many times (slings, mai teis, bjorns, Beccos).

I've also held a baby on my lap while peeing, held them in the air with one hand while wiping. The trickiest part is doing up your pants with one hand - a sling or other carrier allows both hands to be available!

so as pps have confirmed, potty breaks with baby is completely normal and do-able. my suggestion would be to plan ahead. if you're going to be out with baby for a prolonged shopping trip, don't wear snug jeans. it can be difficult to button and adjust.

The bouncy chairs are great. I don't know how I lived without mine. I also use it during bathtime. I lay a thick towel over it and lay Sera (or did when she was smaller) on top whilst I'm getting in and out of the bath because I was petrified of slipping whilst holding her.

One tip for babywearing whilst pottying. If LO has fallen asleep on your back make sure that you remember she is there so that you don't sit back too far and bang her against the loo. I'm not saying that I did that of course... but suffice to say it is very hard to try and sooth a suddenly woken up, very cross baby whilst peeing and trying to unwrap a wrap at the same time. It wasn't pretty!

definitely this....ugh, I don't know how many times the ends of my moby wrap have gotten dunked.

Yes, both of my DDs have accompanied me into the bathroom. They don't seem to stop once they're beyond the babywearing stage, either!

A simple pouch sling is great for around the house (and I love mine in and out of the house, and used them with DD1 for well over a year) - no straps to come lose or dip into the toilet, no readjusting needed, easy in and out - the pouch style is great for a beginner babywearer!

I do all the time, especially when we are out at the mall or something. I have even figured out how to take my toddler to the bathroom while still wearing the baby!

Yup, wearing makes public restrooms much easier IMO. I'm not sure where you'd put the baby while peeing otherwise.
