kitchen floor cleaning tips

Thread Starter
we just moved from an apartment with a tiny kitchen (which i would usually just spot clean) to a house with a large kitchen/dining area.

the kitchen opens to the backyard and we keep the door open a lot. needless to say the floor is filthy. looking for tips on daily cleaning as well as a more intense monthly routine. products used (preferably non-toxic), favorite tools, etc. any suggestions?

the floor is ceramic tile and sort of a beige color.

we also have beige colored ceramic tile. Our backdoor is off the kitchen, too. and we live in the dust bowl, so there is sandy dirt everywhere.

I vacuum the floor rather than sweep it. Usually a couple times a day in the worst areas. I use Ecover floor soap for mopping and it works well. I just really try and not let the kids track stuff into the house, they will take off their shoes if they are dirty before coming in. I just stay on top of it so it doesn't get filthy.

We just did the opposite, moved from open concept hardwood floors all over to a tiny kitchen with tile. I do the same here I did there only its more limited. I spot clean with a mrs myers all purpose cleaner. I vacuum as needed. Then I scooba once in a while with vinegar/water. I love my scooba

Do you have an old towel or two? Or can you purchase some from yard sales? If so, I say, every day, pour a large bowl of hot water, perhaps with a dash of white vinegar in it, around the kitchen floor, then put one of the clean old towels down, and scrub it all over with your feet. Wash the towel, and voila, you will be amazed at how much of the dirt and grime is lifted, soaked up by the towel and no longer on your floor. Perhaps every week, you might employ a mop and bucket, but then dry it (thereby picking up all the dirty water) by walking around with the dirty towel. You can try some floor cleaner (like Sal Suds by Dr. Bronner) if you feel you need some extra oomph and prefer a fresh smell, but I think the thing that would be doing the most cleaning is the towel.

I have the exact same issue. I vacuum up as much as I can and then spot mop with my Ready Mop (like a Swiffer WetJet). But my vacuum takes care of most of it.
