Abrams' Star Trek movie

Anyone planning on seeing it?

Any Star Trek fans excited or worried about the "reboot" - done by a guy who didn't watch Star Trek?

I am worried about it, as ST is near and dear to me and it LOOKS like the movie is just flashy camera angles in space, and not about Star Fleet, exploration, human condition, etc, that ST usually is.

But, I am hopeful that this could be a shot of life into a dormant franchise.

Any Trekkies/Trekkers out there?

Trin.

My family is going to take me to see in on Mother's day morning. We figure everyone else will be out at brunch.

GREAT IDEA!

I think I will ask for the same thing.

I'm looking forward to seeing it actually. I agree that it might be a little flashy. I grew up with a HUGE Trekkie dad so I am sure that his influence will seep in while I'm watching it. I'm not really a big Star Trek fan (my dad's rolling in his grave ) but I really like Abrams so I want to see what he does with it. I never really could stand the original show as a kid. I thought it was way too cheesy but I liked TNG a lot.

I didn't know that he (Abrams) never watched ST. Weird, I would've thought that he fit the bill of a Trekkie to a T. My dh said that he might take me next week if my mom will baby-sit.

It does look flashy and Young Guns-y but I still want to see it! Love me some Star Trek.

My question is is it cannon? I mean how could it be with it being done by someone like Abrams and for people who don't watch/like Star Trek.

From the Trek boards I've been reading, it doesn't seem canon at all..... Abrams wasn't a Star Trek fan (I was surprised by this too) and from what I understand, there are no writers from the STNG crew involved - it is this point that is making me nervous.

Star Trek isn't supposed to be zing-boom-pow.... but it kind of looks that way, and the reviews I have read keep on saying that it looks like Star Wars. Yikes. As much as I am fond of Star Wars, the two worlds are totally different.

Bah. I'm conflicted. I love STNG.... I respect the Original Series, because it boldly went where none had gone before (space, utopia, hope, interplanetary government, science) and in turn led to the creation of STNG, but I realise that it was 60's and tired. So, I am happy that it isn't my favourite crew that is being re-booted (or tampered with!!) and I am hopeful that this could re-energize the franchise and result in a TV show... but I am still fearful that this movie could be blasphemous.

JJ Ambrams got Nimoy to bless the script and appear in the movie... he did this so he could say to fans like me "if you don't think this is real Star Trek don't talk to me, go tell that to Spock." grrrr.... I don't know if I like that!

I'll watch it. Excited but still worried.

Given that Nimoy has been notably disgruntled about his Star Trek career in the past, I don't know if that's a selling point. (I Am Spock/I Am Not Spock - which is it lately?) We'll see. I am purposely not looking too deeply into this, because I'm hoping to go and enjoy it, but yeah...the previews have me a little concerned. I think it's supposed to restart the franchise for the MTV generation, not appeal to old-timey fans. IMO, that's what it looks like.

Cautiously optamistic. Me and dh are going to make a date night out of it.

I get attached to characters so it will be hard for me to make the switch.

My thoughts on it are similar to yours, Trinitty. ...except I don't think I can bring myself to watch it. Maybe if I hear some glowing reviews from TNG fans, I'll change my mind. Right now I'm betting it's pretty much a high-paced, sexy action flick that happens to be set in outer space. Not my cup of tea at all.

I'm a little hesitant, but definitely want to see it. Trying to find a babysitter would be a nightmare, though, but I'm hoping.

I can't get past the idea of all of the original cast serving on the Enterprise together right out of the academy. It feels like someone rewrote history. :

Okay, don't flame me. Didn't they all get assigned to the Enterprise together? Was it a gradual thing. Like Kirk was assigned and then later Spock came along, etc...?

I feel ashamed even asking that. LOL. My youngest brother's middle name is Tiberius so you can imagine how serious my dad was about this.

Also, when I saw the previews for this, I was like, "Oh look ST looks fun. I actually want to see that." :

(I'm going to geek-out here)
In the original series:
Spock served on the Enterprise with Captain Pike.
Kirk wasn't assigned to the ship until he was promoted to captain and he didn't want a Vulcan first officer.
The first pilot aired as The Menagerie, a two-part episode. Majel Barrett and Leonard Nimoy were the only two actors to continue on to the regular episodes. The cast we know and love came in on the second pilot.

Here is the time line of Kirk, Spock & McCoy

Star date:

2245 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 started its first five-year mission under the command of Robert April

2249 Spock enters Starfleet Academy at approx. 17 earth years old and Leonard McCoy starts Medical school he is about the same age.

2250 Kirk enters the Academy (McCoy and Kirk meet for the first time this year)

2251 Christopher Pike takes command of Enterprise.

2252 Spock begins serving under Captain Pike while still a cadet

2253 Spock graduates from the Academy and McCoy graduates from Starfleet Medical

2254 Kirk graduates from the Academy

2263 Kirk is promoted to Captain of the Enterprise (Spock is already on board)

2264 Dr. McCoy becomes CMO

So they defiantly didnt all start out together on the Enterprise

I dunno...I don't like Abrams at all. And I've seen quite a few scenes on YouTube and it just looks like one big mess. (and yes, I watched the Star Trek franchise up until Deep Space Nine, so perhaps I'm biased)

I know. This is why I was wondering if it was cannon at all. Does it fall under the Star Trek universe in any way?

You know if he wanted to do a sci-fi action flick he could've come up with his own idea. Just sayin'

I guess I should say in Abram's defense that I thought there was some emergency in the movie and that is why they all end up on the ship but aren't actually permanently there? Like this happened and then maybe all the other stuff did. But I have no idea and really it's still a stretch.

Oh, okay. Thank you guys. I can see then why ST fans are not too happy with that. I guess for someone who isn't a big fan it's (of course) not going to be noticed but for people who love the story it's a pretty big deal. That's too bad.

I LOVE his tv shows so I hope that he does a good job with this, but it seems more slim now. I did see him on The Colbert Report and you could tell that he wasn't a big ST fan. I think that he even said something about not having a picture of him sitting in the captain's chair. Even I would've gotten a picture....

My Mom was joking with me about the movie and asked me if I wanted her to find my old uniform. (my dad had a ST store and on the weekends I worked there and sometimes had to wear a uniform.

Anyway, thanks for the clarification. Hope the movie isn't too disappointing.

Ok so the Wiki article says they wanted to keep it canon but used some elements from the books (not necessarily canon).

I guess I'm just going to have to see it which is probably not going to happen any time soon
