When they used those earbug things in The Wrath of Khan they made you tell the truth and made it easier to control you. Eventually they'd kill you. I've got to go get my old VHS copy of the Wrath of Khan and rewatch it. I'm sure that they took it out of Chekov but whatever crewman was with him was not so lucky.

I've been creaped out by the eat bugs since I was like 8. I still can't watch that movie without getting the shivers.
Same here, I've always had a hard time watching that part of the movie.

I was also thinking this but I am not too sure it is the same bugs used in Khan.

Oh....I guess it was a Centaurian Slug not a Ceti Eel

Apparently I have mixed up my nasty Star trek parasites. How embarassing.

Well Abram could have totally thought of something more original...

Yeah, I rewatched the Wrath of Khan yesterday (I made Dd1 turn her head when we got to the earbugs) They didn't look the same.

I think Abrams' use of the bug thing was what they call "an homage" to the Wrath of Khan. It was slightly clumsy though, far too blatant. He should have just tried forced telepathy or something.

I should point out though that what's-his-face did NOT resist it, otherwise the drilling machine thingy wouldn't have started on Earth. They were able to bypass the planetary defense grid without apparent difficulty, which means the Starfleet guy totally gave up the goods.

Saw it last night for our anniversary and I loved it.

On the Spock/Uhura thing- apparently, TOS hints at a sort of attraction between the two, and also Roddenberry intended for there to actually be one. The interracial kiss made famous by Shatner and Nichols was originally supposed to have been shared by Nimoy and Nichols, but Shatner's huge ego won out. Also, Roddenberry and Nichols were having an affair at the time. The Spock character is the one the Roddenberry says that he identified with most- hence the attraction between Spock and Uhura. I must admit that as a Star Trek nerd myself (not a Trekker but certainly a huge fan of TOS), I was a little shocked by the Spock/Uhura thing until I was reminded about the hints of an attraction on the TOS.

We wend to see it again last night. It's so great!

That opening gets me, though. I have to stifle *sobs* by the time it's over.

I love the action, but I really really like the characters. It's right on. To me, a sci fi fan, but never really having seen much star trek, it doesn't feel contrived. For example, when the characters say lines from TOS, it doesn't feel like they were forcing it. It feels like something the character would say. The humor is fantastic. I love the banter. Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, Bones--they have these uncomplex lines and scenes, and yet they come off feeling like multi-dimentional characters, and we're just getting a glimspe into their life.

I love the relationship between Spock and Uhuru. It doesn't seem wrong to me at all (I know, I'm not a trekkie, or at least I'm a noob). She's very logical, intelligent, and driven. If he's going to get involved with a human, she would be the one, it seems to me.

I love the back and forth between Spock and Kirk. When they are getting ready to beam aboard the Romulus ship, their little exchange about Uhuru is so great! Spock really is awesome. Kirk isn't this god--though he thinks he is one--but I think it's great how scrappy he is. He's not ginormous, he's not muscle bound-he just won't quit, and I love that. He's always taking on something too big, whether it's a mission or an enemie, but he'll just keep taking the abuse and going at it until he accomplishes his goal.

And I am a Spock fan. Young Spock is hoooooooot. Holy cow he's lovely. Old Spock looks so much like my late grandfather (minus the ears, of course) that if about brought tears to my eyes.

I could see this movie a third, no, a tenth time. As soon as it's available, I'll have to hole myself up with it. I haven't felt this way about a movie since LOTR came out.

I still haven't seen it! I agree about Kirk, which is why he was always my favorite captian. He was so scrappy, so tenancious! Big ego, sure, but the guts and brains to back it up
(Spock wasn't my favorite of TOS. Loved him but not my fave.) Leonard Nimoy was in The Bodysnatchers, and he looked EXACTLY like my late father. the last time I watched it, I started bawling as soon as I saw him. I never noticed it until after my mother had given me some old photos. After that, I have had a special place in my heart for Spock and Leonard Nimoy.

Well, yeah - the original movie sucked. I'm still stunned they managed to make a sequel.

I still haven't seen the new movie. I'll wait for a DVD. I suspect it's going to irritate the heck out of me, but that's okay.

Oh - and I'm totally with anybody who is creeped out by the ear bugs. Of all the Star Trek movies, the scene with Chekov and his captain was the only one that ever bothered me at all. Blech!

We are a super nerdy family, and shared babysitting with another Trekkie family (we took turns babysitting so we could both go to see it) and both couples, independently, totally LOVED it. AWESOME movie. I was a bit anxious about them messing with the story line, but now I see all the fabulous possiblities. It was very well done and enjoyable.

Ok I just went and saw it again, and I think I get why Nero was so incredibly pissed.

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
It was implied, but not explicitly stated, that Spock's promise to save Romulus *prevented the planet from being evacuated*, and he really did screw up quite horribly.

It makes more sense now. My only real quibble is that

I really doubt that a planet as close to Vulcan as Delta Vega was (ie, being able to see the planet in decent detail from the surface with the naked eye) wouldn't also be sucked into the black hole too.
But I suppose it wouldn't have looked as ominously cool then.

I finally got to watch it last night.
: :::::

It was awesome! My dh enjoyed it too, and he's not a fan of Star Trek (just goes to show how much he loves me, dragged himself to the Star Trek movie rather than X-men. )

I do have a few quibbles myself.
1) How many women do you know can go from "Oh! I'm in labor" to pushing to holding her baby in 12 minutes? That I would like to know.
2) A movie about a possible future where medicine is incredibly safe, admits that hey! vaccine reactions happen! and the medical community now, in real life denies it up and down : funny, but irritating at the same time.

I loved it, the whole thing was exciting, funny, fun and so ST. I thought Quinto was awesome as Spock, but I was not a fan of the Uhura/Spock relationship. If they had toned down Uhura's reaction in the elevator to one more like Uhura:TOS (Nichelle Nichols) I would have been more convinced. The girl who played her was too emotional. Uhura was always a cool cucumber even in the most stressful situations. It would have been way sexier to see Spock and Uhura open up emotionally later in the movie(transporter scene) than in the elevator. The part where he assigns her to Enterprise was dead sexy, you could see the sparks then.
Other than that, loved it! Loved it, recommend it, watching the dvd when it comes out, possibly buying the movie. That good.
You only see the bug for 5 seconds, if that. I'm just saying.

Its been awhile since I've seen it but I thought she was already in labor when they were evacuating her.

I must have missed that part.

She might have been in labour already, but most of that time she was being transported to the pod. She talked while in hard labour, almost ready to push. I didn't know that was even possible

Well ya know, technology in the future is probably so much better. I'm sure they have things that are so much better than the human body can do on its own.

Okay, I remember now.

Re: the labor thing.

To me it looked like she was in transition/pushing while they were wheeling her in the wheelchair. I think that when they were telling her to push, it was more of a "Okay, we are settled, now you can have the baby" kind of situation. I've seen moms, even first time moms, who went from grunting to baby in 15 minutes, so I found it plausible.

Good thing she didn't have that epidural or any heavy drugs...they wouldn't have been able to move her as quickly or easily.

That scene about makes me *sob* every time.

Haven't read everyone's comments, but glad to find the thread. Went the first week it was open.

My comments.

Kirk was "hanging over an edge" too many times for my taste.
I didn't like that Spock supposedly dated Uhura- um, not to my knowledge.

The intro scene was too much- oh any second the captain will be killed, any second my son will be born, any second my ship will blow up! I like a little suspense, but please.

We're watching the original series right now, and there are DEFINITELY some sparks between Spock and Uhura. As an example, check out the episode (season one, episode 3 or 4) called Charlie X (which, for all you geeks, can be watched for free on CBS's website). While he plays the harp for her, she does a sexy little dance and sings a song about a pointy-eared devil who will steal your heart.
