Placing Pre-fold Order- Not Sure How Many Inserts

I am placing an order for my first diapers! I am CDing part time and for now am ordering 24 infant premium (4x8x4, 12"x16") prefolds (or do you think 18 is enough), 4 snappis and 4 covers (bumkin size small). This will be my first size for cloth. How many hemp inserts should I get to go with these?

Also, how often do you wash the covers?

Hi! How old is the baby? if its a newborn -- i think that 18 is not enough. What type of hemp inserts are you looking at and are you planning on using them for doublers?

It is our first baby and we will start using these once they fit (website says 8-16lbs). We are only cloth diapering part of the week- I am going back to work full time and I will use them when I am home. Yes, I thought I read somewhere that I needed some doublers and that hemp was the best choice.

I would probably suggest getting different types of covers if I were you so you can see what works best for your little one. I haven't heard great things about Bumkins, but if you want to maybe get one of those, one Thirsties, a Bummis super whisper wrap, and a Bummis super bright.

Ok, do you think 4 is enough for part time then?

If you are only cd'ing part-time, 18 might be enough, 24 might be safer. With the covers, I might want more, but for part-time it might be ok. (you can always order more later if needed). I re-use my covers maybe 4 times or until they smell like pee...or if they get soiled. Which they do fairly often with younger babies. You can wash your cover by hand and hang to dry if you need more before laundry time.

And the hemp inserts are helpful for overnight or when you can't change baby right away...depend on how often you plan to wash but I would think like 4 might be enough.

btw, I like Thirsties covers best.

I would say that 24 is probably a safer number and i agree about buying maybe 5-6 covers. I like bummis and thirsties covers the best.
You may find that you don't need hemp doublers. I depends on how heavy your baby wets. That may be something that you want to hold off on purchasing until you see how it goes. Depending on how heavy of a wetter you have, you may not find you need them.

18-24 will be fine part time, 4 covers is great - hold off on doublers until baby is bigger....

I agree that for part-time CDing, 18 prefolds and 4 covers is just fine. You probably won't need doublers until your babe is a little older and sleeping longer at night. Hemp doublers are my fave! I suggest the Play All Day Organic Hemp Fleece Inserts.

I went ahead and ordered 24 prefolds and 4 snappis. I waited on the covers and the inserts.

What do you all think of a sampler cover package? Jillian's Drawers has one that has:

1 Bummis Super Whisper Wrap
1 Prorap Classic Diaper Cover
1 Thirsties Diaper Cover (the newest version)
1 Imse Vimse Organic Diaper Cover
$42.95

Would something like that be a better option at first, then I can made get 1 or 2 more from what I like out of those?

I am sure other websites have something similiar too, I just haven't looked too hard yet.

TIA!

I am a big advocate of sampling brands because one thing that works well for one person may not work at all for the next person. So, I would definitely advocate trying a couple of brands and see which one you like the best.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. To be honest, I read about how you should sample different brands but I researched and heard more good things about Thirsties covers than any others so I stocked up on those. No regrets, no leaks here!

I'm sure some mama's may not have had certain covers work for them but I just played around with snappis and folds until I found a way that didn't leak. Then when he got bigger I adjusted accordingly. I didn't have money to buy covers I wouldn't end up using so I crossed my fingers and made the purchase!

For what it's worth I LOVE my covers and can't imagine using any others except maybe the Bummi's bright covers. I love love love the wipe clean insides. Saves us all the time since we cloth diaper full-time (and he wears cloth at daycare too).

Which has the wipe clean insides?

Also, it looks like covers come in a little different sizing then the prefolds. Prefolds say 8-15lbs.. looks like most of the covers come in something like x-small: 6-12lbs, small: 12-18lbs. What size do I go with? Or do I need 4-5 of each?

I believe the Thirsties and the Bummis Super Brites do.

I know that Thirsties covers run big so I would definitely get the x-small. The Super Brites definitely run smaller. Most newborns need the newborn covers, and then the small as they get bigger. If you have really big baby the small may fit but I think the newborn is worth it. A good fit will help contain that runny poo.

I agree that most newborns need newborn covers, so unless you are waiting a while to begin cloth diapering, i would recommend the newborn size.

I am starting with the 8-15lb prefolds, that's not considered newborn size, is it?
Many people use infant prefolds (12x16 before washing) on newborns, you usually need to fold down the length a bit but it works.
They could work as infant prefolds. THey may be a bit big at first, but many people use that size.
