Making Extra Money as a SAHM

Thread Starter
I thought we could use a thread of ideas to bring in some extra income.

Right now I sell things on ebay - mostly Christmas/Birthday gifts that we don't need or want, and I also sell used things we want to get rid of on CraigsList. I've also thought about buying cheap things specifically to sell on ebay but I haven't done it yet.

We're moving soon and I've thought about getting chickens to sell the eggs.

What do you gals do?

I'm working part time up at the local elementary school as a lunch room monitor. I can bring my 3 1/2 year old with me so I don't have to pay for child care. It's just 1 1/2 hours per day, 3 days a week.

Well this doesn't exactly make me money, but it does help us and that's coupons and doing rebates. I guess I get a lot of money from both of those things. I totally have turned into a coupon mom, but it really does help with me staying home.

I also make a little money cutting hair, which is my profession.

I was a mystery shopper before I had a baby/preschooler to deal w/. I went through MSI.com It wasn't any money to speak of, but I'd mystery shop grocery stores so at least I was getting grocery money. I've made a little money selling books on half.com They're the easiest IMO. I would buy books at garage sales or thrifts for a quarter and sell them for whatever. Religious books sold best for me. I'm in the Bible Belt so they're easy to find.

I think--and this is maybe just my lazy experience--but it's hard to make money selling cheap stuff dear in this economy, b/c everyone else has the same idea. Every time I go to my thrift store it's filled w/ ebaying/garage selling moms. That's something too--the lady down my street has a garage sale every month or so and I think she buys stuff at the thrift to sell.

I'm a knitwear designer, so I run a design business from home. I have lots of friends who make money at home from their creative outlets - one is a potter, another a watercolorist, another a jewelery artist, and quite few more who are seamstresses. If you are crafty, there are many ways to use that to make money. you'll never get rich, LOL, but it can bring in a nice chunk of change!

I did ChaCha for a while, but I haven't had time to do it lately with all of the reading & homework I've had to do.

I do ChaCha, mystery shopping, part-time childcare, and like Norasmomma, I save us money by seriously couponing.

I make a tiny bit of money doing paid focus groups.

I'm also doing a direct sales business that had a tiny investment and no minimum orders. I've made over $300/month the past two months doing that, so it's helpful.

Will you be living in an area where people don't already do that? I just ask because where I live it seems like everyone has signs that say "EGGS for sale $2.50". My neighbors across the street have chickens, actually we are about the only people on our road who don't.

I work about 18 hours/week nights and weekends when my dh is off. I know that's not really staying at home, but it allows one of us to always be home with the kids while I'm able to bring in a steady income and that's really important for me.

I work ar church about 4 hours a week doing prayer updates, the power point, and bulletins ... and what ever else the pastor gives me.

I drove a kid to and from school for his mom for a year (there were no buses, she was at home with a baby and didn't drive). That earned me $75 per week.

I also sell some of our used items (clothes, etc) but I don't consider that earning extra money. I consider that saving money on the original purchase. For example if I sell $40 worth of DD's clothes, that makes the $100 I spent on clothes into $60. I put the earned money back into her clothing fund for example, which will then reduce the amount of money I have to put in from the pay check every month until the next shopping trip. Or I save on our alcohol by returning used bottles for cash that goes toward the next purchase. I consider that being frugal, not "earning money".

Right now I work for ChaCha and occasionally write articles for Associated Content. In the past I have worked as a paid children's worker at a church, which was great since I could just bring my one child at that time with me.

In the past I've written for Associated Content, too. At this point I just earn the page view $$, but it pays for my internet connection. Every little bit helps

I would consider home daycare or a part-time evening/weekend job. I actually did work weekend mornings for a while taking newborn pics at local hospitals. It was an awesome job, but I quit when #3 was born b/c the thought of leaving DH with that many LO's scared me.

I have some ideas but I do not think it would be the right thing to do.

I did petsitting on evenings and weekends w/an established company owner for several years. LOVED it!

part time work - off-hours (so you won't need childcare)
