Substituting buttermilk - yoghurt and milk?

I found a great recipe for chicken fingers to make for tomorrow's dinner. It calls for buttermilk though and I don't have any on hand or even a lemon to make my own with milk.

Would using plain yoghurt and milk to thin it down to buttermilk consistancy do the same thing?

The taste would be slightly different but that's what I'd do if I was out of buttermilk.

I use that substitution all the time, it comes out fine.

You can also use vinegar to sour milk if you don't have a lemon. I also use yogurt as a substitute sometimes, but as pp mentioned the flavor will be a little different.

Well, I was out anyways and I did get the buttermilk for the recipe. Actually having made it tonight for dinner I found I could have used the yoghurt instead. The recipe called for a 1C. buttermilk with 2 tsp. mustard mixed in to marinate the chicken fingers before breading. The mustard would have hidden any yoghurty flavour there was.

I never buy buttermilk unless I'm doing a BIG bake (like at the holidays). But I always have yogurt on hand. Using half yogurt/half milk works just fine and IMO tastes better than using milk with lemon/vinegar.
