Healthy chocolate milk options?

DD recently discovered chocolate milk at a restaurant and I don't mind giving it to her at home. When we can afford it (the milk and the drive to the farm) we get fresh raw milk. Otherwise, we buy hormone free whole milk.

I started with Hershey's syrup then I realized HFCS is the first ingredient, so I bought some Nesquick which has sugar listed first.

Ugh.

Any tips? I'm not willing to do a soy milk... I would consider almond milk but if anyone can recommend a healthy mix (and where to find) I'd appreciate it

Thanks!

Unsweetened cocoa powder (in the baking isle) add sugar to taste, mix with a little milk to a paste then mix into the milk.

presto

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they make a chocolate syrup with organic evaporated cane juice. That's the best option I've found so far.

I used ovaltine powder at about half the strength they suggest. They suggest a crazy amount IMO...

You can make your own chocolate syrup. I use 1 part cocoa powder, 2 parts Rapadura sugar (organic, whole cane sugar), 2 parts water, whisk in a saucepan over low heat until all the lumps are out, the sugar is dissolved and it's lightly simmering, then store in a mason jar in the fridge. I usually stir it before adding it to milk, because some of the cocoa does tend to settle into a thicker layer at the bottom.

My kids love Ovaltine. I never, ever buy it but when MIL comes to town she gets them a container or two. This time I let them have one until it was gone, and hid the other one.

Not chocolate, but my dd loves raw milk with a drop of maple syrup. She calls it "special milk" .

I had this same dilemna (DS discovered it because someone gave him a sip). What I did was I took regular whole milk and added just a little unsweetened chocolate soy milk. He loved it. I also used unsweetened chocolate almond milk and that was good too.

Thanks for the suggestions! I wish we had a Trader Joe's near us - we don't even have a Whole Foods.

This is a GREAT idea. How long does the syrup keep?

This is what we do. Though my kids like hot cocoa more than cold chocolate milk.

At least a few weeks, I've never had it go off before getting used up. With those ingredients, about the only 'going bad' that could happen to it in the fridge would be mold.

Whoa! That was the ditto for me... no Trader Joes for us po folks Cocoa powder all the way!

This method is great because you just mix up individual portions in their cup AND you have cocoa powder on hand for impromptu brownies Dual purpose & el cheapo!

I've read about Juice Plus in Dr. Feder's book, but I've never actually seen it; neither in commercial groceries nor health food stores... off to google.
