CD for in the car

This is a spin off of my own thread
Can anyone recommend CDs that would be good for in the car? History, Science, books on tape, etc. Ones that are not songs (that drives me a little batty). Thanks,

We like books on tape. We finished The City of Ember and are listening to The Lightning Thief right now.

Story of the World is available on CD. We also listened to Learn Spanish CDs in the car.

The book Carschooling has tons of amazing ideas.

We listen to books on tape, Boomerang kids magazine CDs, and other kid-friendly music like Classical Kids, Beethoven Lives Upstairs, Peter and the Wolf, etc.

We've been listening to Beethoven Lives Upstairs and The Mystery of the Ring (Vivaldi) in the car lately.

These are great suggestions! We've been listening to Sirius radio Radio Classics (old radio shows). But the other day a biography of Ted Williams came on and they were interested (and quiet). I thought they would love to listen to other educational CDs.

We liked these too.

We love any of Jim Weiss CDs-many are historical such as Greek Myths, Galileo, and Abe Lincoln and some are classics like Mark Twain or Sherlock Holmes.

SOTW is good too.

We've loved listening to the Little House on the Prairie books too on CD.

Great suggestions so far.

Naxos Jr. Audiobooks are very much appreciated here. A good step above Jim Weiss in terms of sophistication -- in other words, they're "junior" in the sense of being not quite intended for adults, but do require a fairly sophisticated young listener. My kids loved the Tale of Odysseus and some of the Andersen Fairy Tale ones from about age 5 on up but got more out of them as they got older.

Boomerang Audiomagazine is great on CD. You can also download it at Audible.com and burn it yourself.

We like podcasts from TheMoth.org, ThisAmericanLife.org and RadioLab.org. My kids are older now. Some of these episodes need to be screened for younger listeners, but that's a relatively enjoyable process for me.

Another big thumbs up for Boomerang Audiomagazine.

You said that listening to music in the car drives you nuts, is it because you only listen to "kiddie" music with your dc? My dh gets great enjoyment from introducing dc to "our" music and has found that the car is a great place to do this.

I love the recommendations you have gotten so far, several I had never heard of before and am greatly looking forward to checking out.

No. We don't listen to kids music (with the exception of They Might Be Giants but I liked them way before I had kids.) I was just trying to avoid cds that teach through song. You know skip counting songs, multiplication songs, etc.
Nothing wrong with them other than I don't know how long I could listen to them.

We've called what we do "carschooling" for years, so we have a lot of time put into figuring out what to listen to in the car...

So far we've done:

Garrison Keillor

Superman With Batman and Robin (the 1940's stuff...it will tear your heart out, some of it)

The first 4 HP books

LOTR

The Hobbit

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

P.G. Wodehouse (my kids aren't as fond of this as I am)

Most of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas

Story of the World books I and II

Several German and Spanish language CDs and tapes

All of the "Classical Kids" CDs (like Mozart's Magic Fantasy, Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery).

Many, many of Odds Bodkins' stories...The Wise Little Girl is a favorite.

So much good stuff out there on CD/tape!

Oh, I see. I can not blame you there. We tried a few of the math song cds and a phonics one with M, and ended up giving them back. I found we have a low tolerance for them as well.

Oh, I hadn't thought of LHOTP as a CD!! Great idea!

We listen to Jim Weiss as bedtime CDs. We have most of them and love them!

The only "teaching by music" CD I've been able to stand in 16 years of homeschooling is "Dinosaur Rap." It's pretty awesome.
