Whole house water filter suggestions?

I am looking for a water filter for my entire home.

The aquasana looks okay but I think it only removes chlorine, and I dont see anything on here that says reversse osmosis. Im not even sure what I should be looking for.

Can anyone help?

Reverse osmosis is good, to be sure, but it is extremely wasteful of water. The only way we have found to remove heavy metals, chlorine, and fluoride (the major problem) is to distill our own water. (And since it it then mineral free, we have to add trace minerals) It's noisy and inconvenient since we don't have the auto fill kind and of course, it's not a whole house system like we wanted. For us, it's a reasonable compromise. Drinking and cooking with chlorine and fluoride simply wasn't an option. We are planning on getting shower filters soon.
I look forward to hearing other responses.
A whole house system would be great.

Think I found a great one that removes most chemicals and bacteria from the water. I wanted to post the link for those of you who are followiung this thread. Theres a sale on it right now.

I may have to buy an ionizer to alkalinize the drinking water after it is filtered.

I have mild concerns about using a whole-house filter to remove chlorine. I have read all the manufacturers literature about it and not really found much addressing this (I'm not surprised), and there isn't much I've found from independent sources.

The chlorine is in the water in the first place to inhibit bacteria growth. If you remove it at the point of entry from your water main, unchlorinated water is sitting around in your pipes, your water heater, the filter tank itself, etc.

Is this potentially bad? I really can't speak from a position of authority, but it bothers me. Enough that I opted for a sink filter (and a shower filter if you like) vs. the whole house.

We recently got sink and shower filters, both of which we really like. We went with Aquasana. I'd recommend this website for those who are filter shopping:
http://www.waterfiltercomparisons.com/

It does a good job of comparing brands and types, giving cost breakdowns, etc.

waterfiltercomparisons site owned by Aquasana

I looked at the waterfiltercomparisons site too. Noticed that Aquasana rated highest on that site, but then discovered that the company that makes (or owns) Aquasana made the site, so it's not independent.

I'm having trouble finding an independent comparison site. Anyone know of one?

We have well water with lots of sediment. We use a 4-stage whole house filter with a washable membrane, sediment filter, carbon filter, and phosphate filter.
We also have a reverse osmosis system under our kitchen sink for our drinking/cooking water. You wouldn't want to have RO for your whole house, you wouldn't get enough water flow for showers, etc. and it would be very wasteful especially in the toilets.

we use a sink filter, since the idea of unchlorinated water sitting in my tank and pipes makes me feel ill.
we went with an e spring

fwiw, we use the sink system by aquasana and I think it works well. I can definitely notice the difference in taste between that and the water from the tap. Tastes more like spring water to me. It is NOT reverse osmosis. MInerals are left in from what I know. I can attest to the fact that we have VERY hard water, and I still get those annoying hard water marks on my coffee pot or pots, etc when using the water. I think those are from minerals right? Anyways....

Interested to see what else people have to say about their systems though - always looking for better information !

Don't waste your money on an expensive reverse osmosis system. They waste a lot of water, and they tend to have a lot of maintenance issues. The Aquasana whole house filter removes heavy metals and synthetic chemicals in addition to chlorine. My dad has one at his house, and we could tell a difference in the taste of the water and the shower water. And he hasn't had to touch it since the installation. The filter cartridges last for 5 years, and there's a 3-year warranty on this system. You can get a 20% off coupon for the Aquasana whole house filter here: http://countertopwaterpurifiers.com
