DD is interested in Volcanoes

Hi there! My dd is interested in volcanoes after coming across one in a page of a book I was reading. She won't let it go. I tried telling her it was mountain with fire in it and she is so fascinated with it and wants to know more. BTW, she is 2.5, an only child. I don't know what to do. I planned on homeschooling her but not starting for a loooong time from now.

My niece, dd's cousin, was/is very precocious and I'm starting to think my dd is following suit.

I mean, I don't even know what she is capable of understanding about volcanoes. It's not like we can go visit one here

I put a video about volcanoes on our Netflix account but it won't arrive for a few days and I worry that her interest might wane by then. I'm a big believer in following the child's interests. Any tips, what should I do? About volcanoes and just in general, because this is not the first thing she's attached herself to, she loves airplanes (because daddy flies on one) and motorcycles (because daddy rides one). I feel like this is a leap towards unschooling. Any tips? BTW, I really, really, really, really (did I say really?) believe in letting children be children, and in letting a 2-3 year old just be kids. I don't want to rush her into anything but SHE is begging me for information!

What about buying or making a volcano from a kit and having a mini explosion in your kitchen? I say, run with whatever she loves at this point.

Where can I get one? or how do I make one?

I agree with Jennifer3141. Your dd would probably love making a volcano. We used an empty water bottle for the volcano. You could make a cap for a volcano out of construction paper or just about anything. A little vinegar and baking soda will create the eruption! Here are some websites for making one:

Erupting Volcano

Making the classic homemade volcano is great for little kids. Not pushy at all. Have fun!

Baking soda volcanoes are so fun! And the supplies are so cheap.

My 3 yr old is extremely interested in learning about numbers & letters & just about anything else we're willing to show, discuss, or teach him. I follow his lead. He loves doing workbook pages even, so we do a ton of them!

I definitely say, if she's showing interest, just go with it!

Ok, so we did the baking soda/vinegar volcano and she loved it!!!! She was running around the house screaming: 'bolcano' 'wava' 'hot' and then making noises like a volcano erupting. I also let her watch some volcano clips on youtube. This is so much fun!

My son had a thing for volcanoes very early on too! He is now 7 and still is overly fascinated with them. We have made so many volcanos over the years. I even knit him one with lava that erupts

A great beginner book on volcanoes is What is a volcano? from the Just ask series from weekly reader. I got a whole set on ebay for DD after getting a few from the library.

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

It's simple cute characters talking about volcanoes, she'll learn about magma and lava and a few other simple facts. DD went through a phase and it seemed most of the books available besides being too advanced, showed the distruction she didn't need to know about at this age. This book doesn't go into that.

Have fun!

We are doing a Unit Study on Volcanoes right now.

There is a movie we got at the library called "The Legend of the Volcano Sisters, by The Backyardigans." My 18 month old right on up to my 6yo enjoyed it.

I second making a fun volcano. You could run your hands through the lava. What child doesn't love getting their hands messy? lol

We have this book called Vinnie Volcano from when DS was younger and he LOVED it! It's more of a cartoon story book, but very informative at the same time. She will get it on different levels as she gets older.

Then we went to Kiluea in Hawaii and hiked the crater and now an interest has turned into an obsession.
