Still looking for the perfect Latin book

OK, I tried Prima Latina. All you people who said it was awful were right. All you people who liked it-- sorry, we tried!

Has anyone used Getting Started with Latin?

I'm looking for something
1. That I can use with my third and fifth graders next year
2. That isn't "formulaic"-- I don't want to do exactly the same thing week after week.
3. That isn't gimmicky, but is still at least a little fun.
4. That isn't strictly worksheet and repeating after a recording stuff. I'd love to be able to work in a main lesson book or something like that.

I just got "Getting Started with Latin." I took Latin in 6th grade, but other than that, haven't had anything to do with the langauge.

It is really slow paced... small, easy lessons. He offers both classical and ecclassiastical pronunciation guides (as well as .mp3s on his site). I think it would be the perfect way for somebody to be exposed to Latin...and have a positive experience.

I haven't done a lot yet... so hopefully more people will chime in.

I found this, but it seems more games and stuff than curriculum?

Ooh, Matin Latin is $3 for the text and $3 for the teacher book (scroll down)

A few years ago, my best friend's daughter was taking Latin and was completely miserable. She bought her the book, "Minimus Pupil's Book"... and it seemed to really help.

I think you could use that as an almost basic first year Latin course.

Did you try Minimus/Secundus? The folks IRL around me love it, especially when they get a group of kids together to do it.

I'm thinking we're going to gather some of dd's friends this summer and play with it.

Next fall I'm going to start my then 7 yo on Minimus and some spoken Latin, then move into either Cambridge or Lingua Latina -- or both.
Cambridge has LOTS of online help, including a discussion list.

We started Getting Started with Latin last semester.
We go super slowly but my 8 yr old is doing fine. We're doing Latin at his request

I love all the suggestions! I am going to look into Minimus. I've also found Our Roman Roots which looks like it might be more of what I am searching for.

Have you tried Latin for Children? We used PL and LC and hated it. Just ordered LFC a couple of weeks ago and the kids love it! The chants and songs make the CDs enjoyable and it has a DVD with lessons rather than just the boring pronounciation CD that Memoria's programs have. It's more expensive (around $99) but worth it IMHO.
