Would you get the HepB...

Thread Starter
for you or your children if your spouse works with bodily fluids all day?

I JUST started my research, and decided since HepB is the first to be given to infants (according the the cdc vax schedule for 2009) to start there. My DH is a phlebotomist in a plasma donating center - he "sticks" anywhere from 25-50 people a day, depending on the day. The donors are screened prior to donating, but it still is a risk - his company makes all the employees get the HepB vax's...

Opinions? Does us being in contact with DH put us in the high risk category? TIA for any and all input!

I would not get it for my baby. The vaccine has been linked to Juvenile Diabetes http://www.chiroweb.com/mpacms/dc/article.php?id=31783

If I were in your situation and my DH was in a high risk field I would not feel worried about my children contracting Hep B. If you DH got Hep B he may need to be careful as far a sharing things like razors and toothbrushes. This site lists the means of transmission: http://www.medicinenet.com/hepatitis_b/page2.htm

For what it is worth my parents are both positive for hepatitis since before I was born but we didn't know it until I was in my 20s. I shared a razor with my mom and sister and our toothbrushes were co-mingled for 20 years and I did not contract the disease.

I am an x-ray technologist and work in a level 1 trauma center (and am in close contact with tons of bodily fluids daily), and my 18 month old daughter is totally vax free (and will more than likely stay that way). It is like the pp said, even if I contracted it I would still have to think long and hard before giving her that vaccine. After having read the pink book inside and out I felt much better about my decision. Good luck!

I your husband is vaccinated for Hep B than why would you worry about him contracting it at work??

There is NO way I'd give this to my baby.
