my dd is not really fond of the magic tree house series. she enjoyed the magic school bus series.

she has outgrown pilkey - the captain underpant series.

she is really enjoying the school setting stories. that are funny. any suggestions of similar type of books?

and little house on a prairie.

she is also enjoying a lot of fantasy like the hobbit and eragon.

any suggestions of similar books in fantasy.

What about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series?

Chronicles of Narnia? Neverending Story?

Oh, and if she enjoys Little House would she be up for some Anne of Green Gables or Little Women?

My daughter loves both Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the Hobbit! Here are some possibilities:

Edward Eager (funny books about magic adventures -- Half-Magic is probably the best known, but all of his are great!)
Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing and all the Fudge books, Judy Blume -- funny books about a boy and his exasperating little brother
the Ramona books, Beverly Cleary
The Worst Witch series -- funny hijinks at a boarding school for witches
Harry Potter (obviously)
I second The Chronicles of Narnia
My daughter just started Freaky Friday, and she can hardly put it down! She keeps laughing out loud
Black-and-Blue Magic, Zilpha Keatley Snyder -- a kid grows magic wings, and misadventures ensue
The Great Brain books might tickle her funny bone -- you've got the Little House element of the historical past, plus naughty-kid hijinks by the Great Brain
Alan Garner's The Weirdstone of Brisingamen is great Tolkeinesque kid fantasy
Has she read the Dark Is Rising series?

I loved anything by Zilpha Keatley Snyder when I was younger. If I need a quick read, I'll still pick up one of her books!!!

OP~If you DD likes Little House on the Prairie she might like The Ballad of Lucy Whipple by Karen Cushman(her other books are wonderful too!)

For fantasy The Land of Elyon Books by Patrick Carman are short and sweet.

Other children's fantasy books I love:

City of the Beasts, Forest of the Pygmies and Kingdom of the Golden Dragon by Isabel Allende

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle (the other books are great too but this is my favorite book of all time!)

Protect of the Small series by Tamora Pierce

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke (Also by her; Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath and The Theif Lord)

Ella Enchanted by Gail CarsonLevine (Again, check out her other books!!!)

The Black Caldron by Lloyd Alexander (And the following books.)

The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley

And I'm not sure how old your DD is but I really liked the His Dark Material Trilogy; The Golden Compass, The Amber Spyglass and The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman.

I have more suggestions but again, I'm not sure the age of your DD.

The Dark is Rising series, by Susan Cooper. Excellent well written fantasy. I found them when I was 12 and read them over and over and over. I was actually thinking about re-reading them the other day.

Love these books, they're excellent.

Rhiann my dd is almost 7. her reading just took off and she is totally devouring books.

she DOES NOT like dark material. i love the lemony snickett series but she does not like them. so i stay away from dark stuff for her. she has been begging me for 'marley and me'. she watched the movie and now wants to read the book.

she comprehends quite a bit of the stuff. somethings of course seh doesnt really get. but inspite of that she gets something out of the books as she continues reading them.

Wow -- she got through Eragon? DS (9) and I put it down about 1/2 way through because it was getting too scary for him. He's not quite at that reading level yet but it was one we chose to read aloud at bedtime.

DS liked the Spiderwick Chronicals and the My Father's Dragon set.

We are currently in the middle of a trilogy that stars with Wolf Brother, but I don't remember the overal series name. I think the auther is Paver. Ancient native culture with some "magic". Really good so far.

How scary is Spiderwicke, btw? I've thought that DD might like that series.

Sounds a lot like my kid! He digs Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series. He also started Artemis Fowl and liked that.

I read the first 5 in the last couple of weeks and liked them. We had watched the movie and dh got the books from the library. They are pretty short and the time sequence and some events vary from the movie. I just started the first book from the second set - 'Beyond' and am not liking it as much. It is a different set of characters, more 'grown-up' imo. Edit: Just saw that you said 'scary'... Um, I don't think it was too bad. The last book, maybe a bit more though. The mom gets kidnapped and they have to fight to Mulgarath.

We also like the Wilderking Trilogy by Jonathan Rogers and I've read the first book of the 100 Cupboards Trilogy and enjoyed it, though it did have some scenes that might be a little scary for younger ones - specifically a witch with no eyes that uses a diseased cat to see with.

My kids really like Lloyd Alexender's stuff also.

For fantasy, how about the Inkheart series. My 4th grader is just eating them up and I understand Funke's other books like Dragon Rider are great as well.

I asked my little guy, and he also suggested Tales of a 4th grade Nothing and the Fudge books by Judy Blume. Along that same vein, he really likes the humor in the Calvin and Hobbes collections.

Also Roald Dahl -- both my dd's love all of them.
