Kind of a late announcement as she was born April 25th @ 5:20 am. Things did not go as planned in fact I ended up with a necessary c-section. Recovery has been rough but I am feeling much better and very blessed to have a live baby out of the whole ordeal. Here is a short version I will update with a more detailed version soon.
Friday the 24th I had an appointment and the midwife checked me I was 1 cm and directly after I started contracting every six minutes. This went on from about 10:30am until 10pm then they got into the real thing.
Around 2am I had a strong feeling it was time to go in even though I didn't feel physically close so we went in at 2:30 they got the waterbirth room all ready for us but had to run a 10 minute heart rate strip on the baby.
They immediately noticed her pattern was concerning, non reactive with late decels) and called in an OB (they don't keep an OB or anesthesiologist 24 hrs so they were called in from home). She was very nice and non intrusive and really took the time to see what was going on. I was only 3 cm at that point so we decided to break my water to see if we could speed things along since she was clearly distressed and when they did out poured an enormous amount of meconium so at that point we knew the baby was in trouble.
We waited another hour to see if I would progress but I didn't in fact I regressed, I believe now that it was my body protecting the baby, anyway her heart rate became more concerning so we decided on a c-section. At that point it was considered "urgent" however by the time I was prepped and ready they started losing her heart rate completely it became an "emergency". That happened 3 times during the next few minutes before she was born. The OB was really sweating it! When she was born they wisked her away and intubation suctioned her 4 times. They never stopped getting meconium out of her lungs but she eventually started responding and from then on recovered rapidly. Her apgars were 1/6/8 She spend 3 days in the special care nursery. I was able to start nursing her the next day and she caught on quickly and has been thriving ever since. My recovery has been difficult as compared to a vaginal delivery. I am truly amazed anyone would ever electively choose a c-section but to each their own I guess. The staff were really great and respectful. The OB did a fantastic job and went above and beyond in the repair to facilitate a V-bac and to cosmetically repair the outer suture so I am really grateful for her kindness.
I am also grateful we listened to my intuition to go in when we did I truly believe we were guided in our decision to have a hospital birth this time as difficult as it was accept during the pregnancy.
Anyway for the fun part. Her name is Hazel Bernice 7lb7oz 20.5 in long with lots and lots of dark hair. She is also a very alert and peaceful baby hopefully that will continue.
