I'm as nervous as I was when I adopted my son! Tell me, what should his first few days look like? Unfortunately he'll probably come home Sunday and I'll need to go to work Monday -- should I have the dog walker come a few extra times to check on him those first couple of days -- or should we stick with what will be our long term routine (likely one walk midday) so that he learns it.

Should I keep him on the leash at first? The foster mom says he's very snuggly and stays close to her -- so maybe I don't need to do that?

Oh, I'm so excited.

Congrats!!!

I would keep him on a leash anytime he's not in an enclosed yard.

To clarify, I meant inside the house. Yes, of course he'd be leashed outside of our house/yard. I had just had someone suggest leashing a new dog and keeping them at your side until they knew they belonged with you.

I'm so glad Lyle's yours now! I had a feeling... And it's cute that he'll have a middle name. I thought I was the only "crazy" person, giving all my dogs (and cats, when I had them) middle names.

Our dog growing up had the middle name of "Evenrude" because he purred like an outboard motor. I firmly believe that all dogs should have middle names.

Thank you for all your congratulations, and putting up with my million questions along the way. This feels so right!

My dogs have all had middle names. I dont have one picked for Ivy yet, but I never picked the other ones either....they just popped out when I was mad at them and stuck

Well, Kali didnt have a middle name, but when she was "in trouble" I used her full name, Kali-ma. Marley is Marley Jacob.

The animals I used to have, didn't have very interesting names...

Aralia (my cat) was "Aralia Baby".
Boo (my other cat) was "Boo Kitty".
Shayna (my dog) was first just "Shayna Pooch", but then it evolved to "Shayna Pooch Dopey Doggie Baby Girl".

My dogs I have now, have such fancy names-

Princess is "Princess Mia Seraphim", meaning Princess, my angel, because she came to me at a time when I needed an angel, and she was already named Princess. Tara is "Tara Aliza Shannah". She was already names Tara, and I wanted the rest of her name to have some meaning, like Princess'. Aliza means joyful, because I really wanted a puppy and she was and is the happiest dog I've known, and Shannah is a varient of her big sister, Shayna's name, and close to another name I like, Hannah.

Congrats!! :

Our pets have always had middle names too. Our current dog is Scout Ananda Waterpaws. (As a little pup, she loved putting her paws in her water dish. She is sometimes called Scout Ananda Muddypaws!!)

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for you and your family, and for Lyle! I try REALLY hard to never push my agenda on other people so I didn't at all mention this before, but as a permanent home to randomly stray cats, I am so relieved you didn't use a breeder! When you buy from a breeder, not only are you denying an awesome stray, like Lyle, a loving home, you're encouraging the breeder to keep breeding, which displaces many other abandoned animals. I am so proud of you!

With all that out of the way, prepare your best, but kind of like having a baby (I assume ) you have to kind of wait and see what works with Lyle. My first pets, I went and bought out the whole of PetSmart - little beds, harnesses, different dishes for each, blah blah blah. They never once slept in their beds, HATED the harnesses, etc. etc. etc. Be prepared to become one with the pet store as you find out what works best for Lyle and your family.

CONGRATULATIONS MAMA!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy your newest addition!

Sigh....I am all for rescue...every animal I have ever owned is a rescue except for the puppy I am picking up on Wednesday. Please, dont paint with such a broad brush. Backyard Breeders (or casual pet breeders), puppy mills, and ignorant people (like my neighbors who kept getting puppies from shelters, etc and as soon as they started acting up they were exchanged for a new one) are the reason there are so many abandoned and homeless pets. Responsible, reputable breeders are not.

Strays and rescues arent always the best fit. Depending on past circumstances they can be A LOT of work, and people need to be aware of that. Its not just as simple as going to the pound and picking up a dog. Now, the same is true of correctly bred purebreds being a lot of work, but they have a good foundation to build on.

Again, I am all for rescue. I have fostered several puppies and worked with groups. I have seen miraculous recovories and beautiful dogs emerge. I used to work with a lady who had a rescue stray doberman..he was 1 1/2 when he was rescued. He is now a therapy dog and the type that you can trust anywhere. Another lady showed dobermans and her dogs were wonderful as well. She also had a rescue who was crazy. She worked with her til she was able to live a full life with her owner and her other dogs, but she was never trustworthy around strangers and children and dogs she didnt "know". Just because its a rescue, doesnt mean that with a little love it will turn into the perfect dog. Not saying you are saying this, but this seems to be the thinking that I hear a lot lately.

Sorry!

I wouldn't leash him to you unless you're worried about potty training accidents, which it sounds like isn't going to be a problem for him! Enjoy your new addition!!

Welcome home Lyle!

A middle name is great. We have a rescue dog and let the girls name her. They kept the name she came with, but added "Winnifred" as her middle name. Where that came from, I have no idea.

Hooray for Lyle! Hooray for Momily and family!
