Louisiana Homebirth Insurance

Thread Starter
So, I am on crappy grad student insurance at the moment, and I am wondering about which kind of insurance to buy before we TTC #1. I have never had maternity insurance, and my internet searches have been annoying (mainly leading to free quote websites where maternity isn't even an option!) And I don't now much about the insurance types here in Louisiana, either.

So, if any of you ladies could tell me what insurance you have used for your homebirth and if it was worth it-(ie if it paid a good amount versus you having to pay most charges) and if you would recommend them, I would appreciate it so much!

TIA!!

We had Aetna for a birth center birth, it paid 60%. Now, we had it through hubby's company, I am not sure what the private cost is, but you might want to check on it. I believe I've heard from other's that they cover homebirths at the same percentage, but double check on that. Good luck! Oh, don't bother with Blue Cross. They cover ZERO, even for birth centers.

My billing company told me that although Cigna and Aetna say they don't pay for homebirths, they are very consistent in paying for the services that midwives provide, regardless of where those services are provided.

I think someone on the louisiana natural birth meet up group had Cigna and had their homebirth covered. I think at the end of the day, it all comes down to what that particular policy covers, not necessarily the insurance company. Read the policies carefully and perhaps call the companies you are considering and ask specifically about the services you want.
