Bad Diaper Rash

DD is 8 months old and has had a diaper rash for about a month now. I've tried everything and nothing seems to be making it go away. The rash is in the front area. I've tried Desitin, Northern Essence, Magic Stick, Nystatin, Mylanta + Aquaphor, Aloe Vera, Corn starch, GSE, Angel Baby bottom balm...none of this is making it go away. At times it looked like it was getting better, but would get worse. I also tried washing her with baking soda water with every diaper change and that didn't help either. This happened when I was CDing so I thought that might be the culprit, but it hasn't gotten better with disposables either and I have always changed her frequently.

Now I'm wondering if it's due to the fact that she's been crawling for some time and by crawling, I mean that she's dragging her body all around the floor. So if the front area is rubbing against a wet diaper, maybe that is causing the persistent rash? I also front carry her quite a bit and DD is a squirmy one, constantly moving her butt so that could be causing the chafing, too, so I'd like to hear from other moms of crawling little ones if they're dealing with diaper rashes, too. I'm glad it's not the CDs causing this, but then what else could be it? Also, if anyone has other suggestions, please chime in. I've been putting on coconut oil today after reading that it has good anti fungal properties. The ped prescribed nystatin, but that and the Desitin wasn't helping and was also drying her skin out and DD was crying at diaper changes. It's been so heartbreaking. Please help me!

try acidopholis. my baby had a really bad rash that the doc said was NOT yeast, but I tried the acidophilus anyways and it cleared up almost overnight. if nothing else works, it is worth a shot.

Also, make sure that you are washing her with water and making sure she is COMPLETELY dry before putting the diaper back on.

let me know if it works for you

Keep using the coconut oil, that should really help a lot as it has helped our DD. She ended up getting impetigo and it cleared that up.

Our DD had this issue when she was around 16 months which was when I wasn't nursing her as often and part of the reason we realized she was geting the rash was because she was slightly dehydrated. I don't know if this could be a reason. Or if she is 8 months and being introduced to new foods, that could also cause a rash and then it will persist when it gets irritated from the crawling and what not, or if that's where the pee is rubbing in more. I noticed each time until she was about 18 months we would let her try a piece of orange (which she loved) she would get a slight rash.

Just some thoughts and I hope it goes away soon for you!

MuslimMama - are you feeding the acidophilius or applying it to the diaper rash directly? Is it probiotic powder that you're feeding or yogurt? I have yet to feed DD any yogurt (she had a milk allergy thru nursing when she was younger) so I have to try that soon, but it'll be great if you can explain how you're giving acidophilius.

RGsMom - I'm still applying coconut oil. How much do you use? I do make sure she's completely dry before applying anything on her and also have tried letting her go diaper free quite a bit, but it's been hard keeping her dry since she pees so frequently. Anyway, after applying coconut oil, do you let it dry out a bit and then put the diaper on? If you cloth diaper, do you put a liner after applying the oil?

My DS got a bad rash on the front part that liked a lot like yeast. I applied grapefruit seed extract, and it went away that night. 5 drops of GSE in 4 ounces of water. Then use it on wipes to cleanse the area.

I used it for 2 days and the rash went away completely (we switched to sposies since we're on vacation, and couldn't be sure that it wasn't caused by detergent we're using here).

I went back to CD yesterday and it was fine... but then after being in his BG all night, it's back

But I will do the GSE again b/c that worked great.

Hmmm...is it possible it could be a food allergy? I hate to always suggest that, but it was the case for us. We knew ds was allergic to dairy fairly early on. Since he always had a rash, the 4 day rule never helped because he's had rashes since birth. Anyhow, as I was offering him more soy products...he had both diahrrea and diaper rash, but it took about a month for it to build up in his system and then for me to figure it out. Took out the allergen, no more rash. And we really thought it was yeast, but the creams didn't help that much.

anyhow, hope it's not, but could be a thought.

Good luck.

I am happy to report that the rash is almost gone after using coconut oil. I am now a believer. But I ran out of it and didn't use it and now I see small red dots again...will have to use the coconut oil again.

As for GSE, I used a recipe that used a lot more drops and it must've been too strong because DD cried and cried. I'll have to try the GSE again, too.
