Barn making trouble

DH is trying to make a barn similar to Sams Stable seen here :http://www.blueberryforest.com/elves...ams-stable.htm

What he's having trouble with is the cutouts. Being a novice wood worker, he's drilling a hole in the middle of the windows and then using a scroll saw to cut out the pieces. But he can't seem to get the wood to cut straight. His lines are wavy and the wood looks more like someone used a hand saw. It would take ALOT of sandpaper to even it out.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What kind of wood are you using? Could he be hitting knots? Are you taking care to go quite slowly and not bend the blade?

It's very difficult to make straight cuts with a scroll saw. You could try using a thicker blade than one that you'd use for cutting animals.

I'll go ahead and show him this thread.

Just for clarification - he's not cutting the whole barn out with a scroll saw - just the windows and doors.

Is there a better saw to use for this project?

I'd invest in a dremmel tool. It's great for fixing wavy edges He'll get a steadier hand as he gains more experience.

Good luck with the barn! We have Sam's Stable and DS plays with it daily! (It's also been decorated with a sharpie. *sigh*) The barn was my first big toy purchase and it's been wonderful!! I'm sure your little one will love it!!

I particularly like that it's open from both sides...so it's got double the stalls PLUS the loft! One thing you could probably skip if he hasn't cut it out already is the big double door. It doesn't get played with often at our house. But if you possibly can, make the ladder for the loft! All of our animals (including the elephant, giraffe and dinos) climb that ladder and try to squeeze into the loft. We have a very eclectic farm
