Beginner question about seams

So I've mastered pajama pants and skirts and decided to branch out and try to make some tops and dresses for DD this summer. I'm about finished w/ 2 of them, but keep getting stuck in the same place. (It's the same pattern.) I'm sewing the yoke and the facing and then I'm supposed to layer the seams. Oh, and this is somehow all attached to the armholes (it's a sleeveless pattern). After I layer the seams, I'm supposed to turn the yoke facing to the inside, and I can see how that works and how the rest of it will come together, but really I have no idea what it means to layer seams. I know this may be hard to answer without seeing the actual pattern, but just thought I'd throw this out there in the hopes that someone will have a clue. TIA!

I think it means to trim the seam allowances in layers, staggering them so that they aren't a big thick seam, like

I think that's right. But I don't know why it would be necessary? Because we're not talking about a LOT of bulk here, right? Maybe it's a very precise pattern. Is it Burda?

No, it's New Look from Simplicity. It's supposed to be a quick and easy pattern. And no, it's not a lot of layers. If I just skip that step, it looks fine, but I've been hesitant to proceed for fear that it will mess up something. But really, it's the last step before getting to the hem so I'm confused.

Are these seams you're supposed to be layered in an area that then gets hemmed? It would prevent a lot of bulk from having to pass under the needle and getting jammed if it is.

But if it isn't, feel free to skip it... if it doesn't work, you'll know, and if it does, make a note on the pattern that it's skippable for next time.

Thanks, y'all. It's supposed to be layered on the seams around the yoke and the facing of the yoke. No hemming, but some top-stitching so maybe that's why.
