Cat losing fur?

I'm going to give you all the details on our cats so you can help me out. I have no idea if all of it will be relevant, but I'll put it out there, anyway.

2 male cats, Peter & Paz, born a couple months apart. Both black, both neutered, both mostly indoors (they go outside very occasionally). They're 2 yrs old now.

Paz, the thinner & younger of the 2, has always had a fine coat. Shiny, glossy, almost, a little longer than average short hair, and no bare or thin spots. Very sleek looking.

Peter is heavier, has a darker, thicker coat, but has some thin spots. He's been that way since we got him as a kitten. The thin spots are near his ears, above his eyebrows (do cats have eyebrows? ) and on the backs of his legs, near the joint. The vet didn't mention any issue w/ it so I didn't really worry much about it.

Last week I noticed Paz's fur looking very thin on his hind legs and underside of his belly. He doesn't scratch there and it doesn't seem to bother him, but I don't know what the deal is. We haven't changed food or litter or anything.

Any ideas what we're dealing with?

I'd take them in to run a basic blood panel and get the vet's opinion. Thyroid comes to mind, but I'm away from my reference books right now and short on time. I'll be back to this thread later.

Could be mites, or could be some allergic dermatitis...IMHO, that's a typical local for body mites. If he's outdoors it's definitely a possibility. Some anti-flea meds take care of certain mites, but not all. But, even in that case it's still basically an 'allergic' reaction to them.

Oh man. That sucks.

So we ought to do a vet visit, huh? *sigh*

I hate when a bunch of financial issues hit you all at once. We have dental to take care of for all 3 kids (we're self employed & thus, no insurance), ds1 is going under general next month, and now the poor cat... Blah.

Ok. Guess I'll be calling the vet.
