Considering Prevnar

Thread Starter
My LO is 18m now and I'm considering getting her first Prevnar shot at her upcoming well baby visit. So far she has had 1 DTaP at 6 m, 3 Hib starting at 6 m and completing the 3rd dose at 16 months.

Tell me about pneumococcal? How does a child get pneumococcal? I really don't want to get the Prevnar vaccination for her at this time, since after 2 years, the risk is very low (and I right about this?) So, tell me, since I don't really know, how does a child get invasive serious pneumococcal? I don't fully understand the transmission. Please educate me!

What can I do to protect my child if I skip this vaccination?

Remember, I am a partial/delayed vaxer.

What do you think of this information?

You might want to post in Selective/Delayed vax.

Have you read the CDC's pink book chapter on pneumococcal disease? I'd suggest starting there.

Thanks! That was reassuring. It looks like from the cdc site that if you're not in a high risk group, chances are VERY small that your child would get meningitis. If they do get meningitis, they'd most likely live through it unless they're already weak.
Risk factors:
Younger than 2
pre-existing lung problems
attending daycare
of certain decents (can't remember them)
otherwise healthy (no chronic illnesses)

It looks like most problems are ear infections (which we've been able to avoid for the last 5 years from cutting out milk)

Your child has a higher chance of drowning from a freak accident than getting meningitis if he's healthy.

Have you seen this information regarding prevnar:
http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/prevnar.htm

Also, my dd had this shot and only this shot at 4 months - she stopped babbling and using her left hand afterwards. We have had to work hard to cleanse her body and try and reverse the damage. Due to timing - we KNOW it was this shot.

Also, she just had an ear infection and fever of 102 degrees - so much for the "ear infection shot." And she now appears to be immunologically compromised.

Lollicup, I just remembered your username and situation. Given that you've already experienced meningitis with her, probably caused by the HIB, I don't know why you'd keep doing it. You've seen, firsthand, what can happen with the shot.
