My placenta got moldy!!!!

OK, so, after months of reading about the potential benefits of taking your placenta on this board, I decided to go for it. I had bad PPD after my first 8 years ago and it was hell for a long long time. So when my midwives offered to prep the placenta to the point of starting it drying in my oven after birth for a mere $25, I said heck yeah. All we were supposed to have to do was turn the oven off at midnight & grind it up the next day to put in capsules.

Well, it turns out my birth happened during a crazy-busy several days for my midwives, and the assistant and student left in charge of the placenta didn't slice it up first!!! My husband & friend were there, but didn't know what should be happening. So I didn't discover the mistake until the next day, when my husband said it was in a big blob and was definitely not dry. He sliced it up & dried it some more, and after it cooled, stashed it in a plastic bag because his mom was getting ready to walk in the door from the airport & we thought that would be waaaay more than she could handle.

Fast forward to 10 days postpartum...I'm suddenly feeling overwhelmed & hormonal & he gets it out to grind up...only to find over half the pieces have mold on them!!! He threw away all the pieces that looked questionable, ground up the rest & put the powder back in the oven for a few hours. So, now I wonder if it's safe to take? My midwife says she has no experience with this.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

IDK mama.. that sounds sketchy I'm soooooo sorry this has happened. I imagine you're probably pretty upset about it considering you can't just fix it. I ate my placenta after birth as well for PPD and if it were me I would be apprehensive as well were I in your situation. Boy oh boy, I hope someone pipes up with good news for you or at least some wisdom on this. Healing and peaceful vibes to you during your lovely babymoon!

First off, congrats on the new little one!

I can't say for sure if it's ok or not, but I will say that if it were mine, I would feel comfortable taking it. After being in the oven for a few hours, I would think it's likely that any mold was dried up and killed off. I kept my powdered placenta in the freezer (which can also help to kill off any nasties) and just took a half teaspoon in a spoonful of yogurt every morning. The probiotics in the yogurt might help, too.

Sorry you have to deal with it, though. No fun.

I wouldn't. The last thing I'd like in PP is to be sick, even if mildly.

Ick. Maybe it would have been better to cook it up like liver and onions, or even eat it raw?

IDK but I probably wouldn't take it. I'm so sorry this happened to you!!! I was so emotional when I didn't call the plac cap lady in time and thought I couldn't get it done, thankfully since it had been in the fridge for the entire time she said it was fine up till 48 hours not being frozen. I did get them but they are almost gone and I"m really sad and scared about it...I feel emotional with them what will I be like without them???

I'd call or email Jodi Selander from Placenta Benefits or an encapsulation specialist in your area. I'm sure that someone would be willing to respond with some support for you and your situation...they're all passionate about placental benefits and postpartum support.
