I think the whole "hanging by the crotch" danger thing is total BS, personally. Where exactly are all these kids who are supposedly damaged from it? I mean, I'm 32... give or take bjorns and snugglis et al made their debut around the time that I did, and I have not met a single person who was unable to walk upright due to baby carrier inflicted damage.
That's just my opinion but...
The bjorn is not cool any more. It's not crunchy. I don't believe it's dangerous.
We used one with my son and LOVED it. Also tried a sling - hated it. Also tried a frame carrier - loved it.
For my girls we got a second bjorn second hand for $5, woot! I also bought two Kozy Carriers, a beco pack 4th gen, and a beco butterfly. And a second hand frame carrier, $25, yay. Why, I don't know. I went on a bit of a carrier bender. It's not that I thought the bjorn was bad... but I wanted other options... I wanted options that would last longer... and, yes, I wanted to be cool.
The Kozies were OK early on when the girls would froggy up inside... then they started to stand up when we put them in and it just wouldn't work. There was a HUGE gap between when they would froggy up and when they could comfortably straddle my body and I felt like I wasted a TON of money. We loved the Bjorn during this stage. Beco had the same problem, the straddling...
I HATED how strappy the Kozies were... I also hated how it looked in front if I did a back carry with the straps crossed (my boobs looked awful) but it wasn't comfy with the straps not crossed... really the Kozies turned out to be useless purchases for us.
I do like the Beco 4th gen for back carries now that I have the hang of it - but not a fan of the butterfly. Either way you slice it my kids hate front carriers facing in which is what you have to do with these kind...
Still using the bjorn for one baby, the other has gotten too thick. Now I will admit that they are 14 months and not walking yet - but I don't blame the bjorn as they aren't talking yet, either. I think they're just a little slow...
My son fwiw walked at 12 m and I bjorned him as much as these two.
So... I say go for it.
You won't be cool but you'll be happy...

Personally I like the bjorn. It's easy. It works. Baby likes it, I like it. I wish I hadn't wasted so much money on the cool carriers before the babies were here.
eta - we also had a moby briefly. I hated it...
