Mother's Day Gift at Church

Our parish handed out gifts to all the mother's this AM.

My gift was not going to Mass, but DH went.

Guess what the gift was. What one thing screams "mother"? Bottles. I could just about throw things.

All mothers got those bottles, even the mothers with grown children? Lactivism aside, that's kind of odd...was there anything in the bottles? :

Our church just did carnations...a bit more acceptable I'm sure.

that is very strange... i wonder WHAT they were thinking... on the other hand, bottles dont equal formula, my baby gets frozen bmilk in his once in while when somebody is babysitting...
maybe you could suggest something less strange for the next year ... like bibs or something... or something for MOTHERS and not for babies, like a lotion or a dayplanner...

Oh, that's awful. I would love to know the thought process behind that one. Sounds like somebody is clueless. What a waste of money, too. I got a little geranium to plant in my garden. Very nice.

Yeah, did they give all of the mother's bottles? That's just strange!

I agree. Mother's Day is about the mother. How strange. Did every single mother have an infant or child that still were of age to drink from a bottle anyway? I would think a lot of them would have had older children as well.

Weird...

My parish gave out flowers. After Mass, however, they WERE handing out baby bottles...but they were for us to fill them with our "loose change" for the next few weeks, and then return them to the parish to be added up and donated to the local women's shelter/crisis pregnancy center (can't remember exactly which one). Is it possible that this is what those bottles were for? (I've seen it done in other places we've lived.)

I agree, it's really odd - and misleading - to hand out bottles just as a Mother's Day gift. Especially in our (small) parish: after my 6 month old DS, the next youngest child is 9!! (And DS is EBF...so...)

What a strange gift to give on Mothers Day! Thats a babyshower gift, not a Mothers Day gift.

I remember when going to church growing up (Agnostic now) the Mothers got carnations.

How strange!! Our church gave all the mothers a rose

How odd! We got tulips!

Well that was a stupid gift. We got a pen, notebook, and bookmark.

Wow, given the Catholic churches strong support for breastfeeding this is just truly ODD!

how very weird! we got a notepad and a tiny pen...

we did do the 'Baby Bottle Boomerang' a PP mentioned two weeks ago...DS1 has been carrying it around filling it with 'monies!' The baby hasn't even attempted to taste it!

OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was freakishly odd. Carnations would have been cheaper and more applicable to, you know, people with kids over 1. And that's aside from the whole lactation thing, which pushes my buttons.

bottles? LOL that is the oddest thing I've ever heard of. Couldn;'t they just give out carnations or something?

That is what I was going to ask. My mom has gone to a couple of churches that do this.

It's got to be for saving coins in as a way to raise money for women and children. That is the only thing that makes any sense.

Now that makes sense... I wonder if that was what it was and DH only picked up half the information. (My mother's day gift to myself was NOT wrangling twin toddlers in mass by myself while DH sang in the choir so I stayed home)
