How's this for a stash idea?

For the newborn, we're just going to do Kissaluvs and Bummis, unless they end up not working for the new one as well as they worked for dd--they were perfect for her.

I don't really plan on buying anything else until after the baby is a couple of months old, but I'm thinking in advance, of course.

2 dozen standard 2x5x2 prefolds (+15 we already have) - These are almost as big as premiums, length and width wise, but a lot thinner, so they'd eventually have to be doubled, but they'd be a lot trimmer in the meantime, and quicker to dry. The closest thing I've found to a one-size prefold.

1 dozen organic cotton MEOS (+3 OC and 1 bamboo we already have) - I love these and have thought about having an entire stash of nothing but...but they have their pluses and minuses just like every other kind of diaper, you know? Mainly I want to have some because my mother is going to be doing a lot of the diaper changing, she strongly prefers the coverless method and although she doesn't mind pinning--goodness knows she did it enough with me--she has mobility issues and I want to make it easier for her.

Probably a mix of Bummis and Mother-ease snap covers to go with these.

1 dozen organic snap Bum-Genius one-size AIOs (+1 we already have) - I just ordered one of these to try, tried it on my average-sized three-year-old and it fits nicely on the largest setting. It's a nifty diaper and I bet it would come in handy for overnights at SMIL's house, but I just don't think AIOs are practical enough for everyday use.

I know it's not all one type like I really want, but darn it, they all have pros and cons! Three isn't so bad???

I'm thinking at some point, and maybe this is that point, you're going to have to become okay with more than one type of diaper.

And three is the perfect number!

...The thing is, I like prefolds best, because they're so soft and fluffy and you never have to worry about them in the laundry and they're so versatile. So if my ONE KIND were not prefolds, I would be missing out on my favorite part of diapering! And yet, I do not like to be the only person changing diapers! This is an exaggeration since dh will use them if he can trifold, and my mom and MIL don't mind pinning. But I get nervous and sweaty trying to explain them to other people, "Cloth diapering is so easy! Look! All you have to do is--" and then multiple steps.

Even for me, though, prefolds are hard if the baby is being super wiggly or is asleep in a weird position. And fitteds are much easier to use under wool or fleece. And they'll be easier for my mother to use coverless and she's going to be doing a LOT of diaper changing (go mom! ). Yet, fitteds still make me nervous and sweaty showing other people, because of the separate cover step, MEOS (which are my favorites) in particular because MEAFs tend to confuse the heck out of people, and I don't like the Rikki Wraps as much.

Finally, AIOs are impractical for everyday use because they're not as durable or as breathable, but they allow me to evangelize, and a dozen would be enough that I could leave the baby with my SMIL overnight without making her nervous. The organic snap BGOS seem like the best deal, even though they are headachingly expensive at the outset, because of being one-size.

Galatea, I deeply appreciate your support, but I'm still justifying.

Hey--P.S. Isn't Kissaluvs coming out with a new all-natural diaper? Do you think it will be as good as the MEOS? I really like Bummis covers but they don't fit so well over MEOS....

...or I could just get a stash of prefolds and Bummis like I want, keep the few other diapers I have and maybe buy one of the new Kissaluvs to try, and see how old/big the baby is before I find a caregiver who can't handle laying a prefold in a wrap and fastening the wrap like a disposable.

Sounds like a good stash to me.

I was fantasizing the other day about my SIL getting pg (can't believe I have so much time on my hands) and if she wanted to CD, I could get her stash for her shower present.

Here's what I would get:

2 doz periwinkle GMD ub prefolds
1 doz yellow GMD ub prefolds
4 newborn nikki wraps
12 bg xsmall AIOs
packet of snappis

Simple and elegant, no? Would have to wash every other day though.
