Nanny rates

There are waiting lists 9 months long around here. It has been suggested that we look for child care the moment we find out we are pg. We're planning to TTC in a couple of months. : I want to have my mind made up on childcare before we start trying. I'm hoping it doesn't take a long time to get pg ... You just never know...

We are trying to decide between daycare and a nanny. What is the going rate for a nanny? We would need one 3 days a week for 8 hours. (24 hours a week). I'm in the Jackson MS Metro Area (specifically Brandon)

Anyone have any idea?

I'm not familiar with your specific area, but I was a nanny for about 7 years up until 2005. At that time I was paid $10-$13/hour.

Thanks.
There is a "help wanted" ad in Craig's list for 5 days a week/9 hours a day at $175 per week. Can you believe that?! That's insane.

We can afford 8.30 an hour. I'm wondering if maybe a nanny share would be a better idea for us.

5 days/9 hours per day for $175/wk?! I made more than that babysitting as a teenager! It has always amazed me how little some people are willing to pay to have someone watch their children. :

I think you could probably find someone to come to your home for what you are willing to pay. I was in the Atlanta area when I was earning $13/hr, so in a smaller town $8.30/hr would be reasonable. But, nanny sharing may be a good option for you as well. Good luck! I know it can be difficult to find someone you trust to leave your babies with.

8 an hour is respectable. That's more than someone would make at most retail/customer service jobs (Target, some Hotel front desk, etc) and if people like working with children. I don't think you would have too much trouble-I know people would be very happy with that around here, especially with the job market like it is.

Today I found a 23 year old on craig's list for 7 per hour. I'm beginning to think this might work!! Thanks!!

This is still such a huge decision. It seems silly to be concerned about it so soon. I'm open for advice...

Ask around at your church! You may find a retired woman who would really enjoy this type of part-time work! Good luck!

Asking around at church is a great idea. I'm going to keep that one in mind.
