Baby's Soft Spot Getting Smaller?

my son is 3 mo, and is healthy and happy, weight gain and head size were just right at the last well baby about a month ago.
today, my mil was babysitting and my sil came over, and she is a pediatric nurse, and she said that it seemed to her that my baby's soft spot was too small - it is about an inch in diameter. she said it is usually bigger than that and doesnt close till he is 18 mo.
i made an appointment with out doc to check it out later this week, but of course it got me really worried, she said if it does start closing earlier than usual, he'd have to go into surgery
she said she is not 100% positive coz she doesnt usually work with babies that small, but apart from being a nurse, she has 9 grandkids to whom shes really close, so i usually trust her judgement.
anyone have experience with this? or knows more? any feedback is greatly appreciated

This is a great link regarding fontanels. Perhaps you can find the info you are looking for there.

Dd had a somewhat small anterior fontanel that her doctor kept an eye on. She was fine, no surgery needed. Her head looks quite normal these days. (Well as normal as anyone who considers a leotard with a tutu or nothing at all standard daytime dress and who is growing out her bangs so we can never see her eyes!)

From what I remember, getting smaller at 3 mos is OK. Closed at 3 mos = cause for concern.

My ds had a very sma soft spot he is now 2 1/2 and all is fine. His younger sister is 10 months & also has always had a smaller soft spot. I asked out Dr at one of ds appts and the Dr said it was fine. I think its wise to have it checked for peace of mind
