going to try Tide...

So my wash routine has been:

swish in toilet for BF poops right after, then dry pail
cold rinse or wash with no det.
hot wash with 1 scoop Charlie's
sometimes rinse

I didn't notice any issues at first but now I think the diapers aren't coming clean enough. They smell fine (though not after peed on) but have stains. I know I can put them in the sun but I'm in an apt and that would be tricky.

I use FB, BG, Angel Wraps AIOs, Thirsties AIOs, and HH colors and prints. Microfiber and hemp inserts.

I was reading on Abby's Lane about problems with charlies and her prefering Tide. I want the diapers to be cleaner but I worry about buildup and having to do multiple rinses, when I'm fine now not doing any.

I'm going to bleach my inserts (not the hemp, right?) and then try Tide. Anyone have any experience with it?

I also think I need to put less diapers in the wash at one time. Which sucks, b/c my washer is small. So doing a long process would suck with multiple loads.

I agree....a lot of people have had issues with Charlies. Although some people use it with no problems, if you are having trouble, it is certainly worth trying something. We have used tide in the past with no issues. I liked it.

how many rinses did you do after using it? How much did you use?

Tide is the only thing that works for us!

We just did the one regular rinse that the wash cycle includes plus an extra rinse. We used about 1/4 - 1/2 of the recommended amount. Occasionally we felt like we had buildup so we would do some extra plain hot washes.

Tide has enzymes and is BAD news for many little bottoms.

I use purex free and clear without issue.

I use tide on all our laundry with no problems. One trick I've learned is to make sure the washer has enough water in it--mine adjusts for the size of the load but that is not enough so I override it. When I had a small (very small UK size) washer I had to wash every day for 2 kids, every other day for 1 kid and always do cold rinse then hot wash with extra rinse.

I tried Purex Free and Clear for a few cycles and they still didn't feel clean enough.

I just did the first Tide load and they came out very, very clean. Haven't used them on him yet though so I don't know if I'll get rashes or if I have buildup.

Have you tried stripping with just HOT water?

Don't use Tide. I tried it and it did get them clean. But about after a week, they both got terrible enzyme rashes. Try Allens or Mountain Green. Add Calgon to your wash water to help get them cleaner. Try a tablespoon of bleach occasionally and then rinse it well. But don't use Tide. I couldn't get the enzymes out and had to throw all the diapers away.

Well, I already washed a third of my diapers in Tide, so too late to not do it! I"ll update after I see how they go.

The enzymes in Tide are bothersome to the diapers and even for me as an adult. It burns my skin. Won't touch it with a ten foot pole. I would also suggest some of the alternatives mentioned as a better choice. The enzymes are not good for diapers or the waste waters that come back to our drinking waters.

I used Tide for a long time and never had problems with my boys. I used Charlie's for a while and never had a problem with it either, but it didn't seem to clean as well.

I've always used Tide. DD has not had a reaction, and from day 1 her clothes have been laundered with Tide, along with her dipes.

I was reading the same and wondering if I should try tide. I use Trader Joes soap and diapers are stained but they smell clean. But, after pee they smell. I'm going to try to strip them next wash.

Issues with smell and stains can be fixed using safe detergents. Switching to Tide can just bring other problems.

But wouldn't tide only be a problem if the child had sensative skin and even clothes would cause an issue?

I ask because my baby is born yet, but my good friend that made most of his diapers suggested just using tide. My whole family uses tide for everything, including underware adn my step son still pees his pants so it isn't like we haven't seen what happens with his skin with something that has been washed in tide and pee'd on.

Personally, I hate the smell of the free stuff and would much rather use tide as long as it doesn't hurt the diaper itself, but as for skin sensativity, none of us have it, so I would think it would be a safe bet the baby wont either.

We use Tide Free on everyone's clothes with no problem. If I use it on the diapers, the kids get an enzyme rash. Your mileage may vary.

No. I can use tide on clothes just fine (I don't, but I can...) but on diaper, it combines with pee and then can actually BURN. IME underwear isn't the same as diapers as it's just one or two layers and dries quickly (compared to diapers...)

I wouldnt swish in the toilet. Scrape off what you can and then soak in a little detergent in the washer w/ just enough HOT water to cover the dipes. Let them soak about 10 mins and then run it through to spin the water out. Fill it w/ hot water and about a tbsp of detergent (we used Tide or whatever we had at the time- never any issues) and let it hot wash. When done, run another HOT w/ no soap to get the soap out and then dry.

You can use Oxy Clean for a soak w/ the detergent 1st too.
