nighttime

Thread Starter
I'm pregnant with our second dc. With our ds, we used disposibles, but I'd really like to cloth diaper this lo. I'm leaning toward prefolds mainly because of the cost. I may try a few pockets or aio's to see if there is anything else that I like, but it's such a cost that it's a little overwhelming unless I know it's going to work for us.

Anyway, I'm feeling more and more comfortable with the idea, but I know that if I wake up to a leaked diaper on a regular basis, I am going to feel pretty discouraged. I have a friend who uses disposibles at nighttime, but I feel like if I'm going to do it, I want to do it all the way.

So what are some nighttime tricks? TIA

I love prefolds. I started with them, tried a lot of other things along the way, but I've always come back to my prefolds. They never fail us. I also use fitteds, which require a cover. Buy your stash of prefolds, and either buy some hemp doublers for night time or buy a few fitteds to use with your covers. I really like crickett's hemp fitteds, and they are some of the cheapest fitteds out there (about $11 or $12/each).

Wool has never failed us at night - make sure you read up on how to lanolize and wash it! The Imse Vimse Wool Bumpy is machine washable. There are also soaker, shorties and longies if you don't mind hand washing

Just add an extra prefold. I found prefolds to work better at night than other diapers.

We love our prefolds at night--with a strip of fleece to wick the moisture away. Just add a doubler on the outside--for us that's a terry washcloth and folded microfiber towel. We then use either a wool cover or PUL cover.

We used sposies for the first 3 months and actually had more leaks with those blasted things than we have had with cloth.

You'll need lots of absorbency at night, and a dependable cover. You can double up the prefolds. I like a wool cover that's long in the legs and high in the waist, like an Aristocrat or Disana, at night. It's a big cost, but you only need one. Don't get one for a newborn, though. They poop so often that you'll likely be changing through the night anyway, so you can just use whatever you use in the daytime. Once baby is a few months old and stops pooping with every feed, then you can invest in the wool. Well lanolized wool and plenty of diaper underneath, and you should be waking up with a dry bed almost always.

i use a diaper cover 1 or 2 sizes too big then stuff 3 prefolds in it. i fold the first one in thirds and put in on the wrap first, then take 2 and fold the front in so there are wings in the back. i put that on DD and no leaks. she was a heavy wetter too. just lately at 25 months has she stopped wetting so much at night. the only time i had a leak was when i didnt get the seal around the legs good enough.

Almost anything can work at night, really. I use pockets at night with a combo insert (has microfiber and hemp together), plus an extra hemp or mf insert. Or any combo of 3 inserts usually does us well.

I have some fitteds that work at night by themselves, and others that I use with a hemp doubler.

Prefolds have also worked for us with an extra hemp doubler.

I tend to like hemp because it gives good absorbancy with less bulk.

There are tons of choices and you will find something that will work for you!

If you are doing prefold, I would suggest placing inserts/doublers for extra absorbency and adding dry layer to keep your baby's bottom dry throughout the night.

I personally like bumGenius Pocket for night time. I simply add extra hemp insert for extra absorbency (in addition to the microfibers). Hemp is thin and absorbs more than cotton. I love the dry layer on the pocket diaper for night time. It keeps the bottom dry...and my daughter goes 10 hours without leaking.

Right now, we are only using prefolds (my fave). At night, DD wears a prefold and 2 doublers (hemp and/or microterry...whatever I grab from the pile). DD wakes up leak-free every morning.
