Which pocket diaper for a CD newbie?

DS is 13 months old and I'd like to start CDing. I'm SO overwhelmed by the brand choices. Not considering price, what would you recommend? How do I know what fits best?

1) I know that I definitely want a pocket diaper or all-in-one so it will be similar to disposables.

2) DS is VERY wiggly and hates diaper changes (I usually have to run after him and put the diaper on while he's standing up) so I think that velcro tabs will be better than snaps.

3) I currently use Pampers Size 4 (DS is 21 pounds) and he often leaks around the legs. When I use Huggies he leaks up the back.

4) He sometimes has solid poop and sometimes not. He is still bf several times a day.

5) My husband is not so keen on the idea so it really has to be an eay-to-use CD.

Thanks!!!!

Based on what you wrote, I would suggest Bum genius.

We use BG and fuzzi bunz. Personally, I like the FB better, but my husband likes the velcro better. It's easier and faster to him. I hate the velcro, its a pain in the butt, it's already fraying after only 2 months, and it's so annoying taking it out of the dryer! The fuzzi bunz are also a lot trimmer and cuter in my opinon.

But BG is still a great diaper, many people LOVE them so give it at try

There are literally hundreds (if not thousands!) of options.

You are right that a pocket or AIO will be quicker to get on. I have a very wiggly boy who I have to change standing up for this reason. velcro is faster, but I think snaps tend to last longer.

Pocket vs. AIO is a preference thing really. pockets are nice because you can adjust absorbancy, but AIO's you don't have to stuff.

In terms of specific brands, I would buy a few different ones to get an idea of which fit your LO the best. If you find that none work quite right with your LO's body, you can have a WAHM make a custom fit diaper for you. You can PM me for more info about that, but I would start out trying 3 or 4 different kinds of diapers. The blowout/leak problem can be very different between disposable and cloth.

Off the top of my head, I would try bumgenius, happy heiny, FB (hey you may love snaps) etc. Find an online shop that sells a variety of brands, or check out clothdiaperclearance.com, sto save on combined shipping.

Fuzzi Bunz were my first diaper and I still love them. I use Bum Genius too but the velcro is definitely on it's last leg of life- I prefer snaps. DH wasn't on board either but he has no problem changing the FB.

If you are wanting velcro, I'd say Happy Heiny's or Bum Genius. But really, don't be afraid of snaps. They are much better, especially for toddlers, IMO.

I would suggest a "pocket sample pack" which many online diaper stores have. Usually they have several diapers for you to try and you get a bit of a price break on them. Something like this: http://www.momsmilkboutique.com/PocketSampler.html

Or ask for recommendations here and describe your DS' build, since some dipes are better for skinny legs, chubby legs, etc.

I would definitely try some BGs! Definitely one of the easiest diapers to use.

I also love, love, love my Drybees AIO hybrids. They work fine as an AIO, but there is a pocket if you need to add extra stuffing for naptime or if you are going to be going out.

Another more pricey option that I LOVE, is the blueberry pocket. I just checked on thier website (blueberrydiapers.com) and they don't have the sized diapers anymore (am I just missing them?) but I'm sure thier onesized pockets are just as great.

Just keep in mind that there is a learning curve with cloth, so don't expect to be able to jump right in without a few wet bed sheets! It takes a few tries to figure out what works for YOUR child.

Good luck!

When we started CDing, I loved bum genius-very easy to use. Over one year later, I love my fuzzibunz. The velcro on my bgs is starting to wear, plus at 20 months, DD easily can remove her velcro diapers. My diapers with snaps seem to be holding up much better and DD doesn't quite have the knack for pulling those off.

FuzziBunz or bumGenius! I also prefer snaps but velcro is less intimidating for some people/husbands.

Wow, thanks for the input!

1) How do I know if the diaper fits well? Can I tell just by trying it on or do I have to wait to see if there are any poop explosions?

2) Is the only reason to choose snaps so that the velcro doesn't get ruined?

3) If using snap diapers, how do you quickly remember which snaps to use, especially if you're putting the diaper on backwards?

4) For the one-size diapers, do you think that the snap adjustments are annoying if your kid is on his/her stomach? It seems to me like it would be uncomfortable to sleep in.

5) Can CDs work for an overnight diaper? What's the holding capacity versus a disposable? Or is that a matter of potentially doubling up on a liner. One of you awesome moms (and dads) mentioned something about adding stuffing for naps or going out. I go out every day and hope for a daily nap, so is that going to be a problem?

Thanks again!!

1. You can try it on but it will take seeing if pee or BMs leak before you really know for sure. Legs should be very snug.

2. Snaps are faster when laundering, you don't have to connect the laundry tabs and BMs don't get into the velcro. (yuck) that said, I like velcro better, it's just so much faster and I get a tighter fit.

3. you know which snaps to use b/c you just pull the sides tight and snap where ever it fits best.

4. They can't even remotely feel the snaps through the inserts. They are very well padded.

5. For naps and going out, I don't double stuff I just use my favorite best non-leaking diapers (currently the BG organic AIO and Thirsties AIO with a hemp doubler fit best and are my going out dipes). For overnight, I either double stuff my Preston Pants or throw a wool diaper cover over the diaper. I found that the right CD holds MUCH better than disposibles, I use disposibles when we travel and they are always leaking much sooner. My boy can wet and poop with the best of them.

I've been reading through lots of old posts and now I'm more confused than ever! There are so many different mainstream brands, WAHM styles, washing instructions, flushable liners, velcro, snaps, fleece, bamboo, etc. I am overwhelmed and think that DS will be potty trained by the time I make a decision! I like the idea of ordering a sample pack from Jillian's Drawers (seems like an economical way to try CD) but that really only lets me try FB, BG and Thirsties all-in-one since I'm only interested in pockets and AIOs. I know that FB and BG are really popular but it seems like there must be some fabulous diapers that are lesser known. Did I mention I like to research all of my options before making decisions? Also, it really sounds like snaps will hold up better so I think that maybe I should stay away from velcro diapers. Then again, it sounds like they could wash well if I just make sure to close the tabs for washing - but it also sounds like poop might get stuck in the velcro. All in all, I'm just not sure where to start. Yes, FB and BG are really popular, but what if I'm overlooking some really good CDs just to go for the tried and true name brands. Also, I'm overwhelmed with the thought of dealing with sticky poop. I spoke to a local CD retailer who said that I shouldn't have to deal with poop more than I am with disposables and, if I am touching it more, then I'm doing something wrong. But that doesn't seem possible to me because I will have to rinse it our somehow and I don't have to do that with disposables. Hmmm, am I overthinking this? Thanks for all of the input from you wonderful mamas!
