Newbie--What Wool is good for soakers?

Thread Starter
I just started knitting a couple of weeks ago. So I thought I would try my hand at making soakers and longies.

Can you guys give me some direction on what kind of wool I should use for this? Sellers you recommend?

I like using spun-in-the-grease yarn from a local farm, personally. Do you have any sheep farms that sell wool near you?

I think it depends on the stage of baby. For little ones I love 3IG bfl or malabrigo or something super soft and delicate. For the crawling stage I like lambs pride (that stuff is like iron and it knits soooo beautifully!) Actually my lambs pride longies have gone through 2 crawlers and toddlers and they are still in perfect knit condition- just a little stained- (never let your kids play in the garden in sunshine yellow longies). Then for rowdy little toddler boys I like peace fleece- another that just won't seem to die. I am going to try some local hand dyed merino for some longies for the boys for fall- it is a little lighter worsted- but it is sooo pretty!

For just starting out, I like natural Paton's Merino Wool that you can get on sale at Joann's for $4-5 per skein. One skein is plenty for a soaker or small longies.

ITA. Also, Cascade220 is an affordable option that still feels nice (not scratchy), doesn't pill like the dickens, and is durable (i.e. wears or a long time). It's my pick for soakers.
