Bottom redness - Now a rash - update in Post #11

My 11 day old LO has redness around his diaper area, front and on his bum, with a little more on each side of his bum cheeks. He doesnt seem bothered by it but my mom suggested doing something before it breaks out in a full blown rash (she CD'd us as kids). We use diaper service prefolds, 7th gen wipes, and have been using CA Baby diaper area spray to wipe poop and apply CA Baby Calendula cream since we noticed the redness.

He seems to be a heavy wetter as most dipes are soaked and heavy with each change with each feeding (3-4 hours). In the last 12 hours I've tried to change him more, and will keep doing that. My mom is here and suggested a diaper cream (prob not CD safe) or washing his bum daily under the water. His cord stump just fell off too so he can get a bath. She also mentioned some powder which I hesitate to use. I can also do some bare bottom nap time. With the last change I used coconut oil instead for a sort of barrier on the skin and may try cloth wipes with water. I may also try 7th gen sposies for a day to see if it could be anything with the diaper service pfs. She washes with homemade soap, vinegar rinse, sun dry, and bleaches between customers (so these dipes were just bleached but next weeks will be washed and not bleached). They aren't the softest diapers, not as soft as the GMD pfs I have for later on.

Any tips? No bumps, nothing around his anus that I could see indicating possible food ties.

___

I saw online a rec for Lanisoh for a rash barrier with CDs. We tried this and cloth wipes and he now has a full blown rash. I stopped using the CB diaper spray which maybe was keeping it from breaking out. My mom thinks it's the percicet that I'm taking from my c-section and not so much the diapers, otherwise the rash would be more widespread. I feel well enough to stop taking the meds as I was only on a half pill, but I'm a little skeptical of that connection. It does seem to be from his dirty diapers as his front area, while red yesterday, looks fine now that he had his first immersed bath. I will try The area immediately around his anus in his bottom is clear. He's also in a 7th gen sposie for now in case it's the dipes. Any other suggestion?

A couple of things I can think of:

1. Bare bum time as often as possible. If he's just hanging out with you in the living room, lay him on a towel or two and let the area really air out.

2. A little baking soda in the bath water when you do give him a bath.

3. Try a fleece liner in the prefold if you're not already doing so. This will help pull the wetness away from the skin. Also necessary if you're using cream.

4. I know many people don't like powder, but I do use Burt's Bees powder. It's natural with no talc. You could also try plain cornstarch. It'll basically keep the area dry.

5. I'd avoid using the wipes - go with plain water on a soft cloth.

5. I wouldn't be pleased with the bleaching. I know again, this is probably common with diaper services, but I wouldn't put anything that's been near bleach next to a baby's skin.

Hope some of these ideas help!

bumped with new info, now a full rash

we just had a bout of killer rash, probably diarrhea related. It was awful. The only thing that worked for us was switching to disposables so I could go at it with the big guns (triple cream paste).

If you don't want to go that route (rash cream and disposables) I would probably try changing more often, honestly...more like every 2 hours, and maybe try pockets for overnight. How about a fleece liner for dryness?

I've put plain oatmeal in a pantyhose foot (cut off from the rest) tied it shut, and floated it in a bath before for rashes. It's really soothing.

oh, did you dilute the Ca Baby bottom wash? It's really strong and supposed to be diluted.

I use plain water with a bit of burt's baby shampoo and apricot oil for a wipe wash...it works really well, and smells pretty good too

really? I hadn't heard that. It's the Diaper Area Wash that is the spray...the directions don't say anything about diluting. It says spray directly onto skin or a wipe.

He's airing out his butt now in a tummy nap and the left side is much much less red than it was at the beginning of his nap an hour or so ago. We'll stick him in a sposie again and see how it goes.

I wonder if they changed it? I had a bottle a couple of months ago that called for a 10:1 ratio.

Hmm interesting. You're thinking of this right?

It says this with regard to a wipe solution, maybe that's what you're thinking of. Then I guess it can also be sprayed right on as an ointment.

Dilute ratio of 10 parts distilled water to 1 part Diaper Area Wash for use as a homemade diaper wipe solution

that's it! I didn't dilute it either, because I didn't want to fuss around with the distilled water and storing it I've just read online that some people reported having issues with rashes after using it

I hope your sno's rash gets better soon. They stink.

I'm about ready to resume cloth. His rash is gone : and what we did the last two days was: sposies, cloth wipes with water, occasional CB diaper spray, burts bees diaper cream, bottom baths and air time. I plan to continue the cloth wipes and go back to cloth dipes and see how it goes.

One question is in the fold of his legs on his front, the top layer of skin is peeling off. My mom mentioned yeast once but hasn't meniotned it seince, not sure if that is a possibility. He was a c-sec baby and no apparent thrush.

Rash is back We went back to cloth, used cloth wipes. I'm wondering if it might be all the OJ I'm drinking after reading one of my child health books. So I am cutting that out. I had quite a bit each day. We're using barrier cream again and changing frequently, not sure what it could possibly be. It's red bumps on his bottom. We thought maybe it was the diapers, but if it was that, wouldn't the rest of his diaper area have a rash?

He also has peeling skin on the folds of his legs, any idea on that?

My DS had the peeling skin in his leg/groin folds, also. He's six weeks now...he had the peeling from about 1 week until he was about a month old. We have Angel Baby Bottom Balm (which is great for the occasional red tushie, and cloth diaper safe, but didn't help with this particular problem). I used Aveeno's diaper rash cream (contains zinc oxide), and the peeling skin did eventually go away. It's an issue of the skin being moist all the time. It's in a crease, so it doesn't really ever get dry in there. We used the Aveeno cream, and then when we'd bathe him we'd wipe the Aveeno away and have some diaper-free time after the bath to help air things out. The Aveeno cream and airing-out certainly weren't a fast fix, but the area got better very gradually over a few weeks.

Note: The Aveeno cream did leave some very light yellow stains on my prefold diapers. When I'd pull the diapers out of the washer, I'd see yellow stains. The stains mostly disappeared after running through the dryer, though. Now I only have a couple of diapers with pale stains (I guess we got a lot more cream on those...). But we had no problems with the absorbancy of the diapers at all.

Red bumps make me think yeast.

Peeling skin doesn't concern me though on a newborn- it's pretty normal.

Hi,

I'm new here, but I just wanted to give you my experience.

My son had a simallar rash when he was a baby. I did everything and it wouldn't go away. It ended up being a yeast rash. It was the same over production of yeast that causes thrush. The doctor said that it sometimes shows up there instead of in the mouth. It was just basically red and wouldn't go away. He gave me a diaper rash cream with regular diaper rash cream, some kind of antacid and a fungal cream combined.

It was amazing the rash went away in a few days and I had been trying everything I could think of for weeks. Not sure if this is your answer, but just thought Id help
