Question about Epsom salt and magnesium

This may be off topic, sorry - but I was reading TanyaLopez's thread about her ds and she said something about him needing magnesium I believe to sleep.

My 6 month old dd and I take epsom salt baths every night - except for last night. She totally did not sleep last night. Could this be because of the magnesium?

Also - when someone says on a post that they are "subbing", what does that mean? Sorry for that question, but I am trying to read through everything and get a plan together for my family.

And finally - my dd has been skipping bms a couple of days this week, and we have been trialing solid foods. I have stopped for the time being because of the bm issue. But is it okay to give her diluted fruit juice? I know not apple juice, I read that it is bad for refluxers. So what is the healthiest - with the most antioxidants and vitamin/mineral content? White grape juice - or is it only the purple kind (which you can't give to a 6 month old?)

Hi Karen!

Subbing means that the poster is subscribing to the thread so they will get notifications when there are new posts. When you are writing a reply, if you scroll down to Additional Options you will see a place to choose notification type.

As far as the missed Epsom salts causing a bad nights sleep - that I don't know, but it could be possible that just the change in routine of not having a bath caused her to be unsettled. Someone else will probably have a better answer.

For juice, I know that Dr. Sears recommends white grape juice because it is the easiest for the body to digest but I don't remember what age. I'm assuming your DD is 6 months? I don't think I gave juice at that age. Did the BM issue coincide with starting solids?

Hopefully some of the more knowledgeable mamas will come along with some better info for you.

ETA Just re-read your post and saw that you did say she is 6 months.

Magnesium is a relaxed so the Epsom salts coils definitely be helping.

You could try a mag supp instead of a bath and see whether it works as well. The magnesium is supposed to be able to be absorbed through the skin, even when I was giving epsom salt baths more regularly I didn't try tapering down the oral mag for my daughter, so I have no idea what would be equivalent. I think I was taking supplemental mag when I was nursing my daughter (my daughter's the one who's more mag-needy) and I don't remember the falling asleep in the evening getting really bad til she was eating fewer solids, but she was a toddler when I started supplementing her and it really, really helped. In retrospect I should've gone even higher in dosage, but I didn't know.

Are you looking for juice to get her pooping regularly again? Maybe prune juice? I don't know how allergenic it is, but it seems more nutritious, I'd think, than either apple or grape. Some people poop better with more fiber, some with more fat, so as you add in more foods, especially if it's mostly low fat stuff, you may want to trial a stand-alone fat.
