anyone have a successful lasagna garden?

i'm considering starting a lasagna garden in a new section of my lawn. i have read a lot of enthusiastic plans on here, but no success stories. for those of you who've tried it, do you think it worked better than just double-digging in some finished compost? ideally i would like to use this land in the fall/winter.

our's is doing great.. i wish we'd piled more in there to be honest, but still the plants are loving the nutrients that are there...and weeding has been minimal..

I do I have to go to work, but if you click on the "me" link and then on the garden tab in the catagory cloud you should find some photos from last year's garden... including making a new bed.

wow, awesome blog, serenetabbie! did you add more stuff to that bed after the photo was taken? i don't think our soil is nearly as nice as in pa.

: Why thank you!

Yes, after the last photo was taken, I added more compost and some left over mulch from the flower bed. In the fall, I raked out all the straw that I used under the pumpkins to cover the bed. This spring, I added composted horse manure and will add compost and then lawn clippings as the season goes on. I might add some wood ash, peat moss or what ever other organic materials manage to come my way.

As for the soil... I think you are thinking of southern PA where there are rolling hills and lush valleys. I live in the coal region, on the side of a mountain (or big hill, depending on your perspective) on a whole lot of slate. Lasagna or raised beds really were our only option unless we wanted to rent a roto-tiller. I would hazzard a guess that you might even live on the same mountain chain
