What is in your nb/small stash?

Due in about 13-14 weeks and I am curious as to what is in your stash. I didn't cd my son from birth last time, so I didn't have many nb diapers. Actually, I should say I didn't always cloth him, we alternated w/ sposies.

I don't know if I have enough. My kids tend to be big, so I didn't buy a ton of nb sized dipes, but I do have preemie pf's to use as well as some fitteds and BG 3.0 one sized.

We used mostly prefolds at that age. We had a few different types of prefolds, and then a bunch of different wrap covers, and some Disana wool and handknit wool. We also had some x-small Sandy's and some small mother-ease airflow covers, and a few cheapie Kushies AIOs. My kiddos were all small, and the twins stayed small a long time, so we got a lot of use out of what we had. The covers I have in those sizes are mostly older styles-- Bummis, Proraps, some nylon pants, a Bumpy Day cover, a few Litewraps, and some Mother-ease Rikki wraps.

My DS was born 8 lbs 11 oz and got big fast. The 36NB sized prefolds lasted 3-4 weeks, along with the 6 NB covers. The 3 fitteds never got broken in and so weren't used hardly at all. He fit in small sized pocket change diapers starting at about 10 days old (when his umb fell off) and they are just now getting a little on the small size (10 weeks old).

For us, spending very little $ on the NB stuff was key. 36 PF's and 6 covers was just about perfect for the begining.

Expectant parents who want to use cloth diapers are often very confused about what makes a good newborn stash. Having had no real-world experience with cloth diapers, choosing what to use on their new baby can be very difficult! Most people want to save money in case their baby grows very quickly and only fits in newborn diapers for a month, but the reality is that most babies can wear newborn diapers for two to four months, so it is important to buy diapers that you will like to use.

Many newborns pee a lot and poop all the time. For this reason, you need 24-36 diapers. My last baby had to be changed every hour for the first month, so I really needed that many diapers! The cheapest way to go would be 2 or 3 dozen infant prefolds and 6 to 10 extra small covers, with 4 Snappis. This would likely get you through two to three days and be very economical since the infant prefolds can be used as pocket diaper inserts and boosters later. Learning to use a prefold on a newborn is easy because newborns stay still while you change them!

Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds are really popular for newborns, and for good reason - they are a fitted diaper that is really easy to put on, but they are truly small enough for a newborn, and their cotton fleece texture really grabs and traps those runny newborn poops. These fit best under an extra small Thirsties cover, but a Bummis is fine as well. If you wanted to use Kissaluvs exclusively, you would need about 2 dozen and 6-8 covers.

The absolute simplest way to cloth diaper a newborn is with pockets or all-in-ones. FuzziBunz makes an extra small pocket with crossover snaps that really fits a newborn and is super-easy for anyone to put on. The SposoEasy all-in-one newborn size is a great option with a soft cotton inner and Aplix closure. The Green Acre Designs small can fit larger newborns and is super-cute. BumGenius! diapers are one-size from 7 to 35 pounds and so are a very economical choice. They might be a bit bulky on a newborn, but that’s okay! Baby won’t mind and you’re saving money! If you choose this type of diapers exclusively, plan on 2 dozen.

(With whatever diapers you get, you need as many wipes as you have diapers, plus another half-dozen or dozen. Get some flannel for pees and little poops, and some textured cotton velour for bigger poops. Don’t forget wipe solution, rash cream, wetbag and pail liners, and the Diaper Sprayer. You will have these for the whole time you have children in diapers.)

I recommend getting some of each type, for a couple of reasons: 1) you don’t know what shape your baby will be or how he will pee and poop; 2) you don’t know what diaper you will like; 3) it’s good to have some very simple diapers that anyone can change (and that you can change at 3 a.m. or while out); and 4) you need so many diapers that it can be too expensive to buy all pockets and all-in-ones. My stash for my last baby was:

18 infant prefolds

4 Snappis

6 Kissaluvs size 0

6 Kissaluvs booster doublers

6 extra small covers (Thirsties, Bummis Super Brite, Bummis Super Whisper Wrap)

3 extra small FuzziBunz

3 extra small SposoEasy

3 small Green Acre Designs

3 bumGenius! one-size (both the 3.0 and the organics)

That makes 36 diapers and I was washing every 2.5 days. My baby wore these diapers for 2 months, at which point she fit into smalls. She could still wear the infant prefolds until 4 months. Of course the one-size bumGenius! still fit her at 11 months!

Right now I have 2 dozen infant cpfs and some assorted fitteds. I will be making a stash of nb fitteds myself using a couple different patterns so I can figure out what fits her better. For covers I'm looking at some nb Proraps, Thirsties smalls and probably some knit longies (I'm due late Nov). I may get some xs FBs but I am undecided about it since they probably won't be worn too long.

Thanks. I actually HAVE cloth diapered before, but I was just wondering what was in everyone elses stash

I used cloth w/ my son (who is now 5) but didn't begin til he was a few weeks old. We used mainly FBs. I don't care much for prefolds, but being that its wallet friendly, we have a few preemie prefolds as well as some trimfolds from GoodMama. I also have some small Sandy's, some Airflow covers, BG one size, FB pockets, Dream Eze fitteds, I have an Aristocrat for night time because thats what worked best w/ my hemp fitted diaper that I used for my son at night.

My kids were 9 #2 oz, 8 lbs 7 oz and 8 lbs 12 oz , so there is no way that this baby will be in nb's for long, which is why my smalls stash is bigger than my nb. I have a TON of diapers (I have 14 Sandy's alone)

I will be sewing most of my own wipes but I did just get a good deal on a 10 pk of Swaddlebees wipes on a going-out-of business store on Hyena Cart. I got them for $4!

I make my own diaper cream, but I've never actually had to use it w/ my kids. They were never really rash, thank goodness.

Our newborn stash consists of:

1 dozen newborn prefolds
5 Kissaluvs 0's
2 Thirsties fitteds (xs)
1 Thirsties AIO (xs)
1 BG bamboo fitted (xs)
2 Nanipoos fitted (newborn)
2 Blueberry Mini Pockets
1 Dream-Eze AIO (s)
2 Fuzzi Bunz One size (won't use right away)
10 Thirsties covers (xs) More than I need, but daycare will not reuse covers
1 BSWW (s)

I would still like to get some small Fuzzi Bunz and a couple more fitted diapers, but we are waiting to see how big she is. DS was born at 41 weeks weighing 8lbs 2oz.

We also have all of DS's diapers that he is currently using which are either OS or mediums.

i was just going to add that the thirsties xs fit for much longer then the bummis nb. (Not as cute though!) My DD is small... 11 pounds at 14 weeks. The thirsties can still fit in a pinch although not with every diaper.

We'll be using mostly prefolds, with some homemade fitteds, some sugarpeas fitteds, Thirsties fitteds and Thirsties covers....with a few Thirsties aio's thrown in for middle of the night changes when my eyes are crossed or closed! Aiming for 30 ish dipes. I have a 2 yo in dipes, so I'll probably have to wash daily anyway...or they won't all fit in the machine!

I'm due in 10 weeks and just going to use prefolds and wraps this time around. I tried practically everything with DD and never really found anything that i loved...prefolds do the trick. And they are cheap. I don't want to waste tons of money again...

I caved and bought 2 dozen Kissaluvs 0 at the outlet sale. I also have a dozen or so one-size diapers (different sizes) to hold us over if that's not enough.
