newby wondering what difference a washer makes

In a lot of (GREAT) advice I've been getting on CDing, I've had moms mention the type of washer they use - in the context it seems they are suggesting that certain things work well with certain washers but with others. Forgive me but right now I can't remember specifically the different things people were talking about, but I wondered if there is kind of a standard "you can do this with this type of washer but can't do this" kind of rule.

I have an older top loader (assuming that is what the TL acronym stands for), but am not sure what HE stands for? Any kind of mini orientation would help TIA

Old washers do better with CDing - more water is used......
HE = high efficiency(front loaders) and use very little water....
Some washers have limitations on the cycles (no soak or no cold prewash then hot wash...)

HE = high efficiency, usually but not always front-loaders.

I have a front-loading washer and I've never had a problem getting cotton diapers clean, but I have had a problem with stink in polyester blend, polyester fleece and PUL, if I try to go too long between loads or wash too many at the same time. Some diapers are easier to clean than others no matter what kind of washer you have but I definitely wouldn't use internal soaker AIO's, for example, with a front loader, unless I had no choice.
