babywearing and diaper/gear bag?

I hope its okay to post this here.

I never liked the diaper bag I had for DS- it just didn't work well for me. Now I have a 2-week old DD and already getting annoyed with lugging around the diapers etc. and the baby herself is still small and easy to carry. What has worked for you? I expect I will also use a stroller sometimes, but I don't want to be stuck bringing the stroller just to wheel my stuff around, which is what I often did w/ DS.

I have ring sling (homemade) a hug-a-bub (stretchy wrap) and a hand-me-down ergo which I am not using yet. I am at a loss as to how to comfortably carry a bag while I carry my baby. All the shoulder bags I have just feel slippy and uncomfortable w/ the carrier, and my book-bag backpack is too big. And I CD, so I can't just stuff it in my pockets or something. I feel sort of dumb b/c I can't make this work... and I was really into babywearing w/ my older son so I'm not even new at it...

I came across these... I have no experience with them but they *look* good.

if you like your backpack but think it is to big. what about buying a smaller one? i use my big one because i like to be able to throw everything i buy in it and not have to carry anything in my hands. there are hipsacks that would be big enough for a couple of cloth diapers. even just a purse style bag would work.

When your baby is big enough for the Ergo -- I really liked the diaper bag/backpack they make.

If you have baby in front, you can just wear the backpack in back; if you have baby on back, it clips onto the carrier itself (so that baby is sandwiched between you and the backpack).

So, the backpack was great with the Ergo, and also just well-designed overall -- we used it all the time, not just with the carrier. Maybe a little small if you CD and bring a wetbag, etc. with you, though...

thanks for these ideas. I will look at the Ergo-made bag. I got a hand-me-down ergo and w.out a lot of the accessories, but perhaps its just worth buying it if it can clip onto the carrier and can be used otherwise too.

I like my regular backpack alright, but I find if I am using a ring sling it makes it all very uncomfortable on my shoulder. And yes, its just too bulky. Perhaps I just need an adjustable-strap shoulder bag with some interior divisions and see if I can make it work as a diaper bag.

I sewed pockets into the tail of my ringsling - really useful for holding keys, wallet, extra dipe, water bottle etc. Sometimes when I would take it off I'd be shocked at how much stuff I had stuffed in the pockets.

lifeguard- I should do that. I *tied* some stuff into the tail of my ring sling the other day.

I'll look at that DIY pattern. I so don't have the energy for sewing right now but maybe that will change. (baby isn't even 3 weeks old yet).

I have a sling bag that fits around my like the sling would in a hip carry. Its a one shouldered backpack type thing. Its a total lifesaver! I got it way before I had kids though so I'm sure they don't make them anymore. I would think any type of messenger bag or one strap bad with an expandable strap would work.

I have also been known to carry an extra diaper IN the sling with DS. I just stick it in somewhere like behind him or in the folds at the shoulder or something where he can't throw it and go on about my business. Works great for quicker trips in where you don't expect to need a diaper but want one JIC.

I have a Skip Hop Duo diaper bag I put across my body under the sling. But usually, I just use the sling to carry baby and our stuff. Keys go in my pocket, but cell phone, wallet, etc. go in the pouch sling. Using my no-pocket babyhawk takes more forethought, I usually don't take my wole wallet when I wear that and just put money and ID in my pants pocket, and use my cell phone case's belt clip.

If we're going someplace where I really need the bag, I make DH carry it.

Just don't forget that you've put, say, your keys in that pocket and swing the tail up to cover baby when you're nursing. Ask how I know to warn people about that.....

It's weird at first - but you do get used to it. I always carry my DS with bags. Today I had him in the Ergo, had the park tote bag/diaper bag and a bag of groceries in each hand.
For the diaper bag I just use a tote bag and make sure the straps are long enough that when it's on my shoulder I can tuck it behind me and have my arm next to my body. If my arm is not next to my body the bag does tend to slip.

I just got a Go GaGa bag and I LOVE IT!!!!

A great tip for moms with older kids, pack in smaller bags and re-distribute the weight!!! LOL

I think you'll get more replies to your questions in the "life with a baby" and "diapering" forums.
