Gdiapers v. "green" disposables

I cloth diaper but this summer I will be traveling. I still plan on bringing my cloth b/c I will only be at my mom's house- but during that vacation we are having another mini-vacation where cloth is not an option.

I'm trying to decide between using gdiapers or some greener type disposable diapers. More specifically sposies that are truly green, unlike 7th Gen that have all the gel in them still.

Has anyone used either gdiapers with the flushable inserts or a green sposie that they had a good experience with? I'm not too sure about the start up cost of the gdiapers though, but I plan on trying to get some covers used and I have some coupons as well.

gDiaper inserts contain SAP gel too. Pretty much all disposable diaper products contain this material in various amounts. The only gel-free diapers that are readily available in the USA are Tushies.

I exclusively use gdiapers with prefolds in them (and recently started making my own cloth inserts). I really like the covers. I personally don't use the flushies, but when I started they're not that bad for the pees, poops are gross (I suggest dumping the poop off into the toilet then tossing the poo flushie).

Although you're worried about the startup cost, if you have a prefold stash or some inserts you love you can continue to use the covers long after you need the flushable inserts, so IMO that would be a better choice than a sposie.... and it's easier than using a snappi/pins and tradtional cover. Used covers are pretty reasonable and with a coupon flushies aren't so bad either.

but if you just need something for a couple days and wouldn't use the g covers after your trip, you might want to get some sposies. Also, the liners and covers DO get dirty at some point and if you will be nowhere that you can launder or handwash/hang dry you'll need sposies.

The nice thing is, that even though the g inserts still contain SAP like sposies, there is no plastic to break down so IMO it's still a better choice over sposies. Also, the covers and liners can go in with your regular laundry, not necessarily a diaper dedicated load. FWIW, if I go somewhere I can't use g's with cloth I use sposies.

I was looking at "green" diapers and found natures choice, natural care, huggies pure and natural, of course seventh generation and there was at least one more but none of there websites really gave much info. To me usually a lack of info means it's not all good. When looking I thought it looks like everyone but Tushies have the gel but wasn't sure, thanks for the confirmation.

Does anyone know of someplace or someones blog that shows what all of them have in them?

Huggies doesn't have anything in it besides wood pulp for fillers. Also, if you look online, you can find $3 off coupons for a package.

Here is their website for them, and you can get a free sample. I sent away and requesed a nb size diaper and I got 3 in the mail w/ a $3 off coupon today!

I used G diapers for a short weekend trip and was happy with them. Planning to use them on a longer trip soon... hoping it goes well...

The new Huggies have only wood pulp? I just got a free sample of them and I didn't see that mentioned on the info sheet in the box. I got 3 diapers and a $3 off coupon but they are only size 2 and ds is a 3 I think. I'm saving them for the new baby.

How many covers, etc did you have on hand.

I used g-diaper inserts with my regular covers on a 11 day trip just last month. We were in hotels where water and toilets were readily available. I washed my covers in the sink when they got poo on them and hung to dry and I aired out my covers between changes. It was fine. I had 5 covers with me and that was plenty. The M/L insert is quite big but still fits folded down slightly in a small cover. I didn't do the swish thing they suggest so I just let the ripped open insert sit in the toilet for a while before flushing.

G diapers contain the same SAP gels as other disposables -- it is noted on their site, but please read for yourself so you don't think I am just tossing out info.

With that information I would choose the greener type disposables if available. Otherwise I personally would be choosing the 7th Generation -- mostly because they have an honest approach in their representation of their product to the public, unlike G's. There is Green and their is Greedy Green.

Hope you have a good vacation.

I just read somewhere recently that 7th gen made a statement about how cloth isn't any greener than sposies. That kind of put a bad taste in my mouth and I previously liked them. I have used them on my older 2 kids several years ago and they worked well. I did read earlier that they have SAP in them.

I decided to give the Gs a try though. I bought 3 covers for a good deal and my friend is going to give me 2 more. I have coupons for the inserts so that will help with the cost. If they suck, I'll just sell the covers off and lesson learned. I was at the grocery store today and the $13 pack of 104 non-"green" sposies was quite tempting but I just can't do it.

If you happen to recall where you read this would you post it. I would like to see it. This does not sit nice with me either. I had a young women, first baby, approach my table at a vendor event on April 2nd and tell me almost the same thing. I had to take a step back and a deep breath I was so disheartened by the mis information being fed to her.
There is somewhere on the G-diaper site that goes into the cloth vs. disposable debate too and I found their presentation very swaying. Subbing in case you happen to recall where you read it.

Good luck.
