Brother 1034D Serger

Thread Starter
Hubby said I can get a serger as soon as I get down to my pre-pregnancy weight and I'm almost there : , so I thought I'd start looking at sergers now. I can spend between $200-300 on a serger, though I'd like to keep it at the lower end of that budget if possible. The brother 1034d is catching my eye.

I've never used a serger before and have been sewing for about a year and a half. I need something as user friendly as possible given the price range and something that will be easy for diaper making and such.

If you have this machine could you tell me the pros and cons of it? What do you love about it? What do you dislike? If you were going to buy another one tomorrow, would you still make the same purchase?

Thanks!

I have it. Love it. I used it for diapers and it was good for up to 3 thick layers like bamboo or hemp fleece. Now we're done with dipes and I use it for skirts, knit pants, and smock tops. I had never used a serger before and I had no problems getting it set up and running by myself.

Love them! A trained monkey could thread them. Super easy.
In fact I have TWO! (Woolly Nylon that I use is sort of a pain to thread because it's so puffy. I use it for my pads. So I have one with WN and one with regular serger thread)

Yes, I bought it after seeing rave reviews on amazon and I love it. It is such a joy to use. Just by playing with it and using some simple instructions, I was able to get the hang of sewing a cotton, stretch, and chiffon, in about an hour. I think it's a great value.

I have that one and I enjoy it. It's a nice machine and I never have trouble with it mechanically. It's easy to thread and my projects turn out well. It doesn't cover stitch, though, which is my only complaint. It's fun to do embellishment on kid clothes especially, and I wish my serger did cover stitching.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I use my 1034D every day, and I've had it for over a year, and I've never had a problem with it. Does everything great, and at a great price.

When I bought it, I never thought I'd have a need for the coverstitch feature, but now that I do, I wish it could coverstitch. That being said, now that I have a need for the coverstitch feature, I actually want to have a coverstitch machine always set up ready to coverstitch, so it's not a huge huge deal.
