A specific question about breastmilk contamination

I'll give a bit of background so that hopefully you will fully understand my question. I was diagnosed with MS in Oct., 2003. I was hospitalized for a few days, during which time I nursed my 2.5 yo ds as much as possible. When it looked very possible that I'd be taking some major drugs, I started cutting way back on the nursing. Up until then, he was nursing quite frequently still. My plan (before all this) was to nurse until he wanted to stop, which didn't seem likely to be soon, as much as he liked it. Anyway, I've decided not to take the drugs, so I didn't have to wean completely. But it became apparant pretty quickly that I just can't handle frequent nursing or "marathon" nursing any more. What we've found that works for us is to nurse 2x a day -- naptime and bedtime. I chose those times because he doesn't nurse as long at those times (usually) and because I just don't have the energy right now to find other ways to get him to sleep. My accupuncurist would like me to wean completely, because it's draining for my body, but he also understands there is a psychological aspect to it that's important. And I really don't want to wean ds completely, and he doesn't want to wean completely either (although he's stopped asking for it except on the rare occasion that he's super tired, which is really sad ).

That said, I've been worrying lately about how good my milk is for ds at this point. I've gone the alternative route in terms of treatment for MS. I had my fillings replaced about 10 yrs. ago, and my health improved (this was before the MS diagnosis, but my health was not good). I did a lot of detox at the time to try to get rid of as much mercury as possible. I didn't listen to my dr., though, and in the last couple of years I started eating fish again (he had said that I should never eat fish again). Not often (about 1x a month or less), and only wild Alaskan salmon (after realizing that farm raised wasn't OK at all -- I'd eaten it a few times, but not much), until a visit to my parents, when we had Oregon salmon several times in a week. I tell you all of that so you know that I probably don't have a huge mercury load, but I do have some -- certainly enough to affect my health. I've stopped eating fish, BTW, and anything else from the sea.

I really feel that the gorging on fish that week is what brought on this attack. So I've gotten back in the program, and a big part of that is detoxing. I'm worried about mercury in my breastmilk. Does anyone know how much gets into breastmilk? Do I need to wean ds for his health?

Just so you know, the detoxing has consisted of 4 C-flushes (basically taking so much vit. C that my system is flushed out), vit. C daily (about 9 g/day), and detox baths (epsom salts in the bath water) 2-3x/week. Plus they've got me on some supplements (sulfur and selenium) that gently pull mercury.

Please help me know what to do!! I get so worried about this. I don't want to do anything that affects ds's health, but nursing is still so important to both of us.

Thanks for reading through all of this. I hope it makes some sort of sense. If it doesn't, feel free to ask questions.

You should look up your potential drugs in Hale's Medications and Lactation, or have someone here look it up for you and decide what you think...very very many drugs excrete very little or none into BM.

the salmon, even if it was too much for you, is not that high in mercury. You're not nursing that much...I honestly would not let it worry you. It is just as possible that where you were staying was too near a mercury-spewing power plant...and now you're not there, you levels will drop. MS seems very complex...more than just mercury poisoning, even if that's a factor.

here's one article by a doc specializing in lactation that says the children get very little from BM...it seems mostly from food, blood (fetal exposure), soil, water and air.

"During lactation, methylmercury exposure is probably not an issue, because only very small amounts of the mercury are present in breast milk. However, the FDA recommends that lactating women follow the same guidelines with regard to fish consumption in pregnancy."

Thanks for the link, Clarity. It does make me feel a bit better. I'm still a bit nervous, though. I really don't want to negatively affect my son's health. And I'm afraid that I wasn't very clear in my op. I'm not so much worried about the mercury that I consumed in the fish, but the mercury I'm excreting with all the detox that I'm doing. And really, there probably isn't a definitive answer out there for me. I guess I'll just have to hope that I'm doing the right thing.

As far as the drugs go, it's not the breastfeeding that's holding me back from taking them. It's what I've decided, for now anyway, based on the information that I've read and based on my situation and on my views on healthcare.

Thanks again,

Christie

but I think the principle still applies...even detoxing very little is probably shed in the breastmilk if it rarely ends up there in regular contamination. Your specific detox method, talk to the people that suggested it to you and see how the excess supplements are excreted, (this is not my area) but it's probably urinary rather than bm. Excess vit C is urinary as I recall.
