'Banned' listed under name - why?

I've seen some screen names where, under the name, where mine says "Member" it says "banned" or something funny like 'banned for XYZ reason."

I don't get it... clearly you're not 'banned' if you're here posting, right? I have this feeling it must be some sort of inside joke. Fill me in, please!

TIA

If it says something silly then it is left over from April 1st

No, I've seen them for months & months now - way before April 1st. Or could that have been still leftover from Apri 1, 2008??

Er...April 1st 2007 was the first time it was done. It was done again this year so there are more now.

You can also pay to have your senior title say something like that.

I just searched out this thread because I was curious about that too. I thought is was some kind of protest to the new user agreement or something (I haven't actually read the new user agreement and know nothing about it, but since I know sometimes people protest new things, whatever they are, I thought that might be it... ).

If it simply says "Banned," this does mean the member's registration has been removed.

I know that a member's membership can be suspended for a certain period after a certain amount of UA violations, nine I think? During this suspension, would someone also be listed as "banned"?

It should not say they are "Banned" if they are just suspended.

Thanks. Also, any advice on how to deal with perhaps inappropriate curiosity when you see "banned" under a poster's name all of a sudden?

Thank you for asking! I have been wondering too. I guess it's an old April Fool's joke, then? Because the people who are posting are obviously not banned, and the reasons are usually very silly.

Wait...I thought something funny could be put under your username if someone did a DDDDC on you.

Oh it can.

This was the staff being delinquents not the members. :
